Sanjay Dutt’s portrayal of Shaukat Vashisth opens the film as a man of wealth and influence, sharing a life with his wife Antara Vashisth, a lecturer. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Antara, a woman of quiet strength whose professional life masks deeper currents of longing and loyalty amid a calm facade. The household’s daily rhythm is kept by Rajni, Sadiya Siddiqui, the maidservant who witnesses the shifting currents beneath the surface.

Shaukat’s life of prestige takes a dramatic turn when he is nominated for the Booker Prize and wins it, a moment that elevates him in the eyes of his publishers, who briefly dream of a new goldmine, only to be let down by his subsequent, less successful works.

Plunged into disappointment, Shaukat struggles with depression and nearly abandons his craft. To cope, he conceives a story about a woman named Tamanna, deciding to shape this fiction around Antara.

It is during this process that he discovers Antara has an admirer in Zayed Khan as Yash Agnihotri, a bright, ambitious fellow teacher with a future ahead of him.

Shaukat’s plan is to have Antara keep her marriage a secret from Yash, pushing them toward a dangerous liaison, while Antara herself is pulled between genuine feeling for Yash and her love for Shaukat.

Whatever Shaukat writes becomes unsettlingly real, and he starts to believe he can steer fate through his fiction, crafting scenes in which Yash would kill himself after learning the truth.

Antara eventually learns of Shaukat’s manipulation and lies to him that Yash has already committed suicide, a revelation that shatters him.

Overcome by guilt, Shaukat’s grip on reality slips, and his mental state deteriorates into schizophrenia. The film ends on a disturbing note as Antara has Shaukat placed in an asylum, closing the circle of a life where fiction feeds on truth and truth spirals into trauma.
