In Evelyn Waugh’s sharp satire, Scoop, a naive young columnist William Boot for the Daily Beast is sent to cover a war in Ishmaelia after a case of mistaken identity. His editor, Salter Salter, and their feared boss, Lord Copper Lord Copper, urge him to take the assignment, even as Boot clings to his quiet country life for job security.

Boot soon finds himself among foreign correspondents confined to the capital; they are not allowed to leave without permission from the Minister of Propaganda. Into this chaos, Boot—whose innate decency and cautious nature stand in stark contrast to the uproar around him—tries to keep a steady hand, jotting notes while the rumors pull him in every direction and threaten to rewrite the truth.
