Sawako Decides 2010

In present-day Tokyo, Sawako Kimura, Hikari Mitsushima, a 23-year-old juggling five part-time jobs and five boyfriends since leaving high school, lives with a sense that she’s not especially remarkable. She also harbors a dislike for children, a detail that colors how she relates to the people around her, including the man who asks for commitment but remains a constant external pressure.

Kenichi Arai, Masashi Endô, a second-rate designer at the toy company where she works, is a constant presence in her life with a four-year-old daughter, Kayoko Kira Aihara. He presses Sawako to marry him, yet she views him as merely average and struggles with the idea of motherhood herself, a tension that undercuts any notion of a conventional future together.

At the same time, Nobuo, Ryo Iwamatsu, Sawako’s uncle, repeatedly phones from their hometown, urging her to return. He explains that her father, Tadao Kotaro Shiga, is dying from cirrhosis of the liver and wants Sawako to take over the family’s ailing freshwater clam packing business. This summons a heavy duty of family obligation that grazes the edges of Sawako’s current life in the city.

When Kenichi loses his job, he convinces a wary Sawako to move back home and to bring him and Kayoko along, setting the stage for a convergence of old loyalties and new questions. The trio travels to Kawaminami, a Pacific coast town in southern Japan, where Sawako must confront the social judgment that awaits her. There, she encounters a community that remembers her five years earlier, especially the women who harshly treat her for having left with her high school tennis club captain, Yoshio Ryu Morioka.

The narrative unfolds as Sawako faces a pivotal choice about the freshwater business, her relationship with Kenichi, the presence of Kayoko, and the direction of her own life. The story threads together duty, status, and personal longing in a quiet, observant manner, inviting viewers to weigh what it means to return home and redefine one’s path when the past keeps pushing from behind.
