Raja, Akshay Kumar, is a gifted yet struggling dancer who makes a living in a poor setting alongside his childhood friend Dattu, Laxmikant Berde, and Dattu’s sister Radha, Kirti Singh, who has cherished him since childhood. While Raja pours his heart into dance and song, Dattu keeps the rhythm on the drums, and Radha quietly roots for Raja’s success.
As a boy, Raja learns that his father, Suraj, was killed and that his mother Malti, Anjana Mumtaz, was convicted for the crime, even though both parents were renowned artists. The shadows of that past loom large as Raja seeks his break in the world of performance. He spots an advertisement for a prestigious auditorium appearance and, after initial rejection, pushes through the barriers, entering the competition and winning the top prize. This victory stirs the ire of the former first prize winner, Manish, Mohnish Behl, who becomes Raja’s arch-nemesis.
In the midst of his rising fame, Priya, Mohini, Manish’s former dance partner, falls for Raja—not only for his talent but for the goodness he radiates. Her affection deepens the moment they connect, and Manish’s jealousy accelerates as he watches Priya’s attachment to Raja grow. Priya’s love becomes a stepping stone: with Priya as his partner, Raja climbs to nationwide recognition, aided by Priya’s father, Rai Bahadur Brij Bhushan Sharma, Dalip Tahil, who lends his influence to their ascent.
Meanwhile, Malti is released from jail after serving her sentence, a moment that reshapes the family’s dynamics and moral stakes. Raja confesses his love to Priya, and his mother accepts the relationship on one condition: she wants to meet Priya’s father on Priya’s birthday. The encounter becomes a tense, fateful meeting, for Brij Bhushan Sharma is revealed to be the same stranger who once attacked Malti and killed Suraj when he tried to protect her. The revelation jolts Malti, who confronts Brij Bhushan in front of a crowd. He tries to dismiss the past, offering a blank cheque, but Malti loudly rejects him, exposing the truth to everyone. The crowd sides with Malti, and Brij Bhushan’s temper flares as Raja walks away with his mother, consumed by anger and longing.
The next day, Priya relays a plea by phone to meet near a temple, a plan overheard by Brij Bhushan’s associate. At the temple, just as Raja and Priya affirm their bond, a figure strikes Raja unconscious. Raja is subjected to an electric shock, and Brij Bhushan pressurizes Priya to marry Manish to end Raja’s efforts. Priya, desperate to spare him further torment, agrees in a bid to safeguard Raja’s safety. Raja, however, fights his way free and returns to the dance arena, with Radha escaping Brij Bhushan’s custody alongside Priya.
The finale unfolds on stage: Raja and Priya deliver a breathtaking performance that cements their stardom. Brij Bhushan surges in with his thugs, and a brutal confrontation erupts. Malti is shot by Brij Bhushan, and her confession lands like a bolt—she reveals that Brij Bhushan killed Suraj. Furious and resolute, Raja retaliates with all his might, ultimately defeating Brij Bhushan in a climactic struggle that ends with Brij Bhushan meeting his fate on an electrified surface. The film closes on a note of redemption and family, as Raja and Priya marry, honoring Radha’s wish, even as Radha herself had been wounded earlier while shielding Raja from Brij Bhushan’s gunfire.
