Cal Cameron Boyce is a senior from a poor family who dreams of graduating and earning a scholarship to UCLA. He lives a lonely life at a high school where Vic Aramis Knight exploits his position as the quarterback to threaten and bully Cal at every turn. Cal’s only true companion is his dog, Runt, and his lone human ally is Cecily Nicole Elizabeth Berger, a fellow teen who repeatedly asks Cal out but is rebuffed because his attention keeps drifting toward Gabriella Brianna Hildebrand, Vic’s girlfriend.

When Cal learns UCLA is courting him for a scholarship, he throws himself into his studies and tries to stay above trouble. A test reveals that some members of the football team are hoping to cheat off Cal’s paper, and he acts to stop them. A teacher grows suspicious and confronts him, but Cal maintains his innocence. Vic and the team pressure Cal to confess, threatening him in the hallway, while a janitor witnesses the exchange and triggers the administration’s involvement. Back at home, Cal discovers that his dog Runt has been dumped in a bin behind his house, a crushing moment that deepens his sense of loss and anger. The next day Vic mocks Cal by mimicking Runt’s whine, insinuating that Cal killed the dog, a provocation that pushes Cal toward vengeance once more. He returns to the football team’s dressing room during the big game and spikes their drugs with cleaning fluid, revealing a broader doping problem within the squad. Vic, who is sidelined by a hand injury during the play, watches as his teammates suffer ill effects at halftime.

The tension peaks as Cal and Vic clash again. Borgie’s father’s pistol is fired into the air during the melee, forcing Cal to choose between violence and restraint. In the end, Cal and Cecily walk away from the chaos toward a homecoming party as police sirens echo in the background, leaving a trail of consequences behind them.
