In the sizzling summer of the 1980s Manhattan, a lonely individual known as Dog unexpectedly finds himself captivated by a television commercial showcasing a robotic companion. This newfound obsession propels him to place an order for one immediately. Once Robot, as he affectionately names his mechanical friend, arrives, a deep and unbreakable bond blossoms between the two. As the days of summer stretch on, Dog and Robot become inseparable comrades exploring the vibrant cityscape side by side.

Their escapades eventually lead them to a beach day, filled with joy and laughter as they splash around in the waves. However, their carefree adventure soon turns into a nightmare when they are caught off guard and awaken to find the beach deserted, and Robot rendered immobile due to rust from the water. Devastated by the realization that he cannot save his beloved companion, Dog retreads the path home, only to discover the beach has been sealed off by authorities with a barbed wire fence, restricting access until the following June.

Despite the setback, Dog’s determination does not waver. He attempts to sneak past the barrier, but is apprehended by the police, leading to his incarceration. With crushed spirits, he resigns to his fate and pins a heartfelt note on his refrigerator—a symbol of his unwavering desire to rescue Robot.

As the months drag on, Dog’s existence becomes one of desolation and gloom. Yet, in an unexpected twist, a trio of rabbits stumbles upon Robot, still abandoned on the beach. They offer him STP oil, which surprisingly repairs the water damage and allows Robot to escape his sandy prison.

Upon Robot’s return to Dog’s apartment, it soon becomes evident that this reunion is merely a fantasy, a figment of Robot’s imagination. In reality, the rabbits had used Robot to fix their broken boat, leaving behind a severed leg and a toe. With Robot cast aside once again on the beach, Dog ends up spending a lonely Halloween, burdened by the weight of knowing that his mechanical companion was never truly real.

This poignant narrative intertwines themes of friendship, longing, and the ambiguous line between reality and fantasy. As winter blankets the city, a fantastical realm inspired by The Wizard of Oz unfolds in Robot’s subconscious, trapping him in a dreamlike existence. Although Robot remains ensnared in this imaginative world, Dog embarks on a new quest in the Catskills for connection, yet continually faces obstacles, culminating in a sleighing accident with mischievous anteaters that leaves him injured.

When June finally arrives, ushering in warmth after a long winter, Dog returns to the beach—only to confront the painful absence of Robot. Discovering a discarded limb, he is reminded of their fractured bond and spends a night reflecting on the silence engulfing his darkened room.

Meanwhile, a clever raccoon named Rascal chances upon the remnants of Robot in a junkyard, identifying a perfect opportunity to revive him. Using a boombox, Rascal pieces Robot together, breathing new life into his mechanical form. As the summer sun shines bright, Dog forges an unexpected friendship with Rascal, while Tin, Dog’s new robotic companion, becomes an essential part of his life.

Throughout the changing seasons, Robot and Rascal become lost in their reveries, reminiscing about the days of their past companionship. One sunny day, while enjoying a rooftop lunch, Robot catches a glimpse of Dog and Tin walking by, completely oblivious to his presence. Seizing the moment, Robot bursts forth from the shadows with the hope of reconnecting with his long-lost friend. Yet, the sudden appearance of Rascal reveals that this moment of reunion is merely a fleeting fantasy, conjured by Robot’s yearning imagination.

Ultimately, Robot resolves to remain hidden, allowing Dog to continue his journey with Tin. As Dog and Tin joyfully dance down the street, Tin senses a lingering sadness in Dog and endeavors to cheer him up. Meanwhile, Robot returns to Rascal for a tender moment, dancing together under the summer sun’s warm glow, showcasing a beautiful yet bittersweet tapestry of longing, friendship, and the intricate ties that bind them all.
