He heads toward the day with a twinkle of mischief, buoyed by a vision of freedom more appealing than worksheets.

Brisbane then visits the Blacksmith, who offers a moment of encouragement but also shares a harsh memory about a kid who was expelled when he was young. The tale stirs Brisbane’s own spark of defiance and plants the seeds for a plan to get himself kicked out of school. With a quick, sly smile, he begins to map out a scheme that involves his friends and the teacher, aiming to test the boundaries of the classroom’s routine.

The mischief unfolds as Brisbane assigns tasks to his classmates. He Stymie to call Miss Crabtree “Crabby,” he has Dorothy hand Miss Crabtree a note claiming she is hard of hearing, and he tells Wheezer to answer questions with attitude. The plan also includes a string of small pranks: tacks on seats, glue on Miss Crabtree’s books, and a loud horn to blast through the room. The class grinds to a halt as the chaos erupts, and even the best-laid schemes start to fray at the edges.

Spud steps forward to recite a poem honoring the teacher, a brief moment of normalcy amid the upheaval. Brisbane fires a spitball at Sherwood, and Miss Crabtree quickly sends him out into the hall. In a larger ruckus, Brisbane even brings in [Dinah the Mule] to the classroom, further complicating things. The fiery outburst earns him punishment, and Miss Crabtree suspends him, threatening expulsion.

The moment of realization arrives: being away from the playground, with nothing to do, isn’t as glorious as it sounded. Brisbane’s resolve softens as he decides to learn the required poem and apologize to Miss Crabtree with genuine emotion. She makes him recite the poem in full, and he does so, tears streaming as he faces the consequences. The day’s tension peaks when Marmalade Marmalade accidentally brings a skunk into the room, spraying and sending the class rushing outside, a startling visual ending that leaves Pete the Pup with a wide-eyed reaction.
