Laura, Abby Wathen, is a down-on-her-luck actress whose love life is faring no better. She hustles for bit roles in commercials, only to discover that one audition could lead to a pornographic movie featuring a group sex scene. Despite that jarring path, she remains a trained theater artist who has performed Shakespeare on stage, clinging to the possibility that a single opportunity might align with her craft.

Kevin, Michael Rady, an ambitious yet underutilized screenwriter, finds himself trapped in a dull relationship with the ditsy blonde Cyndy, Deja Kreutzberg. In a coffee shop encounter, he meets a producer and, when the producer is pulled away by a medical emergency with his dog, Kevin improvises the core idea of a science-fiction project on the spot, deciding to spin it into a full script.

After a particularly awful audition, Laura stops in a cafe and accidentally spills her drink on Kevin, apologizing with genuine embarrassment. He realizes she’s an actress, and a spark of interest flickers between them, but they still do not share names or contact details, leaving them with a sense that their paths might cross again.

Laura’s roommate and best friend, Mindy, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is a nightlife-forward LA party girl whose dating life is a revolving door of encounters. Her wild stories—like running a red light and later sleeping with the officer who wrote her ticket—mirror Laura’s longing for something steadier, and Mindy vows to help her friend navigate the messy world of romance, even if her own approach is far from conventional.

Both Laura and Kevin begin to wonder about the universe’s fingerprints on their connection. Laura watches Dr Tim, Don Stark, discuss how the cosmos might guide people toward what they need, if one learns to read the signs, and that idea threads through their choices as they drift back toward the coffee shop, hoping to collide again.

Kevin’s plan to capitalize on the coffee-shop spark collides with reality when his agent Ted, Joshua LeBar, dismisses the whole “fate-driven romance” idea as a disaster and pushes for a more traditional pitch. Meanwhile, Laura experiments with online dating, posting a page that recounts their near-meeting and offers a way to reach her. The response is overwhelming—126 emails—yet most are misguided or faceless, and Laura ends up going on six dates that disappoint more than they delight.

In the meantime, Kevin’s latest script catches the eye of Terri Preston, Sean Young, a studio owner who makes an immediate offer. Ted celebrates by taking Kevin out to a nightclub, while Laura is invited to dinner by the casting director who saw her in the latest audition. Mindy, meanwhile, ends up in the VIP area after crossing paths with Kevin’s agent, Ted, and a spark blossoms between Mindy and Ted.

As the evening unfolds, Mindy scripts a new dynamic: she and Kevin’s agent plot, Laura navigates a prickly dinner with a pompous director, and Kevin and Mindy begin to see a real connection. Mindy brings Kevin back to her circle, and he agrees to stay the night, choosing companionship over a hurried, pressured exit. The next morning, Laura finds Kevin in the bathroom and assumes he’s another of Mindy’s one-night stands, prompting a tense moment that Mindy quickly resolves by revealing the truth.

With the truth out, the two friends embark on a lighthearted mission to find Kevin, who has slipped back into Laura’s orbit. The pursuit culminates in a simple, hopeful moment: Mindy returns to the door with Kevin waiting, ready for Laura.
