What is Ned's special ability in the film?
Read the complete plot summary of Pushing Up Daisies, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Pushing Daisies follows the enchanting life of Ned, a talented pie-maker endowed with the extraordinary ability to bring the deceased back to life with a simple touch. However, his gift comes with a peculiar consequence: if he revives someone for more than a minute, a nearby living person or object loses a “life value” and dies suddenly, creating a delicate balance that Ned must carefully maintain. Worse still, if Ned touches a revived individual a second time, they are gone forever, a fact that haunts and complicates his life.
From a young age, Ned experiences the emotional toll of his powers. When his mother dies unexpectedly of an aneurysm, Ned resurrects her, setting off a chain of tragic events that results in the death of his neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Charlotte “Chuck” Charles, played by Anna Friel. Tragically, Ned’s mother dies permanently that same night after sharing a tender kiss with him, which leads to the intervention of his agoraphobic aunts, Vivian and Lily, who move in to care for Chuck, while Ned is sent away to boarding school, effectively separating the two children.
As an adult, Ned channels his talents into becoming a pie-maker and opens a quaint restaurant called The Pie Hole. The business struggles financially until a private investigator named Emerson Cod accidentally uncovers Ned’s supernatural secret. Seeing an opportunity, Emerson proposes a daring idea: Ned will revive murder victims temporarily, allowing Emerson to question them about their deaths, which helps solve their murders quickly. For their assistance, they agree to split the reward money. This clever scheme works effectively until Emerson and Ned learn that Chuck, whom Ned has not seen since childhood, was murdered. Ned revives her, but he cannot bring himself to let her die permanently, and their bond deepens into a renewed love, even though they are forbidden from touching.
Despite their love, the lovers remain separated physically, with Chuck living in Ned’s home. She becomes his assistant in investigating mysterious deaths, starting with her own murder case. As they delve deeper into such cases, Emerson also embarks on a personal quest: he is searching for his missing daughter, who was taken away by her mother, a con artist. Inspired by a publisher of pop-up books, Emerson creates his own, hoping that his daughter will one day see it and find her way back to him. Meanwhile, Chuck struggles to keep her resurrection a secret from her aunt Vivian and aunt Lily, who gradually come to terms with her death and her revival.
A revelation arises that Chuck is actually Lily’s daughter, conceived during an affair with her father before her engagement to Vivian. Ned plays a crucial role in uncovering more about Chuck’s past by reviving her father, leading to emotional tension and a complicated relationship. Chuck’s father asks her to travel the world with him, but she chooses to stay in her small town, leading him to leave alone.
Throughout the series, relationships deepen and storylines unfold. Chuck’s secret is eventually uncovered, and she manages to reconnect with her family members, including her mother Lily and Aunt Vivian. Emerson’s personal life advances as his daughter returns to him, and Olive Snook, who has harbored feelings for Ned, falls in love with Randy Mann, a taxidermist friend, and opens her own restaurant called The Intrepid Cow dedicated to macaroni and cheese.
Pushing Daisies blends whimsy, romance, and mystery into a captivating tale of love, loss, and the bittersweet complexity of life and death. It explores themes of fate, responsibility, and the quirky beauty found in second chances, all wrapped in a charming, visually striking package that keeps viewers enchanted from beginning to end.
