Chris, Christopher McDonald, is an archaeologist haunted by vivid nightmares about the murders that tore apart his family during childhood. The tragedy began when his parents and younger sister lived in the ruins of a Yugoslavian monastery while his father hunted for the tomb of Prince Elok, a boy-prince fixated on torture and the worship of a Slavic demon. The killings were believed to be carried out by a workman named Roman Hart, who was later institutionalized at a local mental hospital. Chris returns to the site with his girlfriend Jenny, Lisa Aliff, who funds the expedition through her work as a journalist, and their friends Paul, James Purcell, and Marcy, Jamie Rose. The atmosphere is heavy with dread as memories surface and old testimonies resurface alongside fresh visions.

Soon after arriving, Chris begins to experience delusions, including the return of his imaginary friend Daniel, Aron Eisenberg. The reappearance of Daniel unsettles him and intensifies the sense that the past has not stayed buried. As the group settles in, Roman Hart grows agitated and escapes the asylum to make his way back to the monastery, a move that heightens the sense of danger and doom hanging over everyone involved. The lines between memory and reality blur, and the site seems to breathe with a malevolent history that refuses to stay quiet.

The chilling truth slowly comes into focus: as a child, Chris had been befriended by Elok/Daniel, who had gained immortality from the demon. The price of that immortality was a confinement to the catacombs, a fate that left Elok with centuries to wander unseen. Elok taught him to torture small animals, a revelation that horrified his sister and ultimately led to the father learning the truth. Aware of the consequences, Elok manipulated Chris into helping murder the family and to take the blame away from Roman Hart. He then invited Chris to join him in immortality, but fear finally won out and Chris bolted away at the last moment. Those recovered memories twist inside him, pushing him toward a terrifying decision.

Driven by repressed memories and a growing madness, Chris chooses to rejoin Elok and accept the offer of immortality. He proceeds to murder Marcy and Paul in cold blood, a brutal act that marks a complete break from his former self. He then lures Jenny toward Elok’s supposed murder pit, intending to seal his dark pact. Jenny manages to escape to the outside world, where she encounters Roman Hart. In a brutal turn, Roman is mortally wounded, and Chris turns his attention to Jenny, ready to finish what he started. But a dying Roman shoots Chris just as he is about to kill Jenny, ending Chris’s life and leaving Elok to grieve a moment of loneliness as his promise of eternal companionship slips away.

The film closes with Jenny confined to a mental institution, where she is told that the police could not locate all of the bodies and that there is no sign that Elok ever existed. The layers of memory, guilt, and fear persist, suggesting that the truth behind the monastery’s horrors may be more elusive than anyone imagined.
