The plot follows a young Finnish man named Raivo, who travels to Russia to study the mannerisms and details of a typical Russian hunt. He is taken in by a former Russian general, Ivolgin, and his band for a hunt in a remote forest, led by the boisterous and unpredictable woodsman Kuz’mich, Viktor Bychkov. The group is a gallery of quirks, each member more idiosyncratic than the last, and Raivo soon realizes that this is not a polished, aristocratic spectacle but a far more chaotic affair.
