Set in the vibrant streets of Bergen County, New Jersey, we meet Patricia “Patti” Dombrowski, portrayed by Danielle Macdonald. Her journey begins with a dreamlike vision where her idol, rapper O-Z, introduces her to a roaring crowd as “Killa P.” However, this fantasy is abruptly interrupted by her blaring alarm clock. Upon waking, Patti discovers her mother, Barb, played by Bridget Everett, tangled up in bed with her lover, leaving Patti to face the morning alone. They live together with Patti’s beloved Nana, characterized by Cathy Moriarty, after Patti’s father absconded. Struggling with mounting bills, particularly for Nana’s medication, the tension builds as they face potential legal troubles.

As Patti wanders the streets, attempting to dream big, she is subjected to cruel taunts, notably from a passerby who derisively calls her “Dumbo” due to her weight. Determined, she visits the pharmacy to collect Nana’s medicine, where she reunites with her best friend Hareesh, also known as Jheri, played by Siddharth Dhananjay. Both friends aspire to be rap superstars, and they find their solace at a scenic overlook, trading rhymes and dreaming of fame.

During a pizza run, Patti finds herself attracted to the local shop owner’s son, Danny, portrayed by McCaul Lombardi. Their connection sparks when Danny hands Patti and Jheri a flyer for an upcoming rap show, igniting hopes of exposure. But the work life isn’t as glamorous; at Lou’s bar, she confronts a slew of disrespectful patrons. There, Barb, who was once a celebrated singer, implores Patti to give her drinks before taking the stage herself. Though Barb still possesses an incredible voice that enchants the room, she leaves Patti to hold her hair back as she succumbs to an alcoholic haze.

Eager for a better job, Patti approaches her boss Lou for a raise, which he declines but suggests she reach out to a friend named Ray, played by Nick Sandow, who might have an opportunity for her. After a lackluster job interview, the weekend presents an exciting escape: Patti and Jheri attend a rap concert, where they encounter the enigmatic Basterd The Antichrist, acting through Mamoudou Athie. His unique performance, which combines strikingly hard rock elements, leaves the audience divided and prompts Patti to seek him out post-show, although he dismissively rides away.

The dynamic shifts as they encounter Danny again, where Patti’s hurt pride leads to an impromptu rap battle with him. Words fly, and despite her initial hesitations, her quick wit helps her gain respect from Danny’s crew. However, the confrontation takes a dark turn when Danny retaliates with a headbutt, leading to an intervention by Officer Nickel, portrayed by Wass Stevens. Despite the bleeding, Patti refuses to identify her attacker, keeping her pride intact.

Amidst the chaos, Patti pairs up with Jheri, aiming to record raps with a new group. An encounter with Danny leads Jheri to realize they were sold oregano instead of weed, but in a twist of fate, Patti tries smoking for the first time, only to find herself too incapacitated to perform when needed. Following a comforting trip to the cemetery with Nana, they breathe in the surprises life offers.

Yet their adventures take a somber turn when a hospital visit reveals Nana has suffered a stroke. A passionate encounter at O-Z’s house results in an embarrassment for Patti when her demo is dismissed, leading to her being fired by Ray. Loss and disappointment further deepen as Nana’s condition worsens, leaving Patti to grapple with personal setbacks while healing comes with music.

Eventually, an unexpected call from DJ French Tips elevates Patti’s spirits as she is informed about a competition called the Rookie Monster. This news coincides with Basterd’s struggles with his own path and feelings for Patti, leading to a brief romance that ends in a painful departure. Compounding their challenges, Patti and Jheri manage to rekindle friendships while facing the reality of grieving Nana.

On the night of the competition, Patti faces her fears head-on, now adorned with a fresh hairstyle courtesy of Barb, who, despite her own failings, supports her daughter’s dream. As Patti finally steps on stage, memories of Barb’s lyrics, “Tuff Love”, resonate through the crowd, fusing their voices into a powerful performance. The audience’s energy surges, and her friends rally behind her.

Despite the competition’s outcome, which sees Nomad taking the spotlight, the true victory lies in the bond shared with friends and family. As they celebrate the success of their single “PBNJ” taking over the airwaves, the trio mirrors triumph over adversity, laughing and cheering together as their dreams begin to materialize, reinforcing that their journey is just beginning.
