Josh and his high-maintenance girlfriend, Emily, start off their evening with a nice dinner, leading them to agree that Emily should spend the night. While Emily is a little upset about Josh leaving the next day for a road trip, the atmosphere remains relatively calm—at least until an inappropriate phone call interrupts their dinner. This leads to Emily throwing a fit, tossing the table mid-call, and storming out. Feeling guilty, Josh quickly leaves an apologetic voicemail for her after telling the caller he would return their call.
The following morning, unsure about the fallout from the previous night, Josh makes the decision to drive over to Emily’s place, picking her up for a trip that was initially meant for him alone. His original plan was to visit his brother, Rhett, and collect a purple recliner for their father’s birthday, but as the day unfolds, Rhett unexpectedly tags along, much to Emily’s dismay. During the journey, they stop at a motel where Josh attempts to negotiate for a cheaper room, only to fail in his efforts.
The next day continues to spiral when they arrive to pick up the much-anticipated chair, only to find it has been falsely advertised and is in deplorable condition. They are forced to accept a costly reupholstering job to make it presentable. Meanwhile, a love story brews as Rhett falls for a woman named Amber, leading to an unofficial marriage arranged by Josh one eventful night. However, the mood shifts dramatically when Josh expresses his skepticism regarding Rhett and Amber’s relationship, predicting it will fizzle quickly. This comment ignites Emily’s anger, as she believes he is dismissive of romance. Their argument escalates, with Emily declaring she deserves better—prompting Josh to stomp out in frustration.
The next morning, Josh confronts the reupholstering man, becoming firm, even aggressive, in order to retrieve the chair. Rhett is not happy with Josh’s approach, believing it brought “bad mojo” to their trip. In a fit of frustration that evening, Rhett burns the chair, only to be caught in the act by Josh. A struggle ensues, resulting in Josh breaking his own arm as he tries to prevent the destruction.
After enduring these chaotic events, they finally arrive at their father’s house, empty-handed and with Josh’s arm in a cast. Following a heartfelt conversation with his father about the complexities of marriage, Josh finds the courage to talk to Emily about their relationship. They come to a mutual decision that it’s best for them to part ways, seeking a healthier path forward. In this whirlwind of misadventures, they arrive at a poignant conclusion about love and the bittersweet nature of relationships.
