Paris Can Wait 2017

As Anne (Diane Lane) accompanies her husband Michael (Alec Baldwin), a well-known film producer, to the Cannes festival’s conclusion, she is blissfully unaware that their planned getaway to Paris is about to undergo an unexpected twist. Upon discovering that their vacation has been altered, the couple finds themselves on an unexpected journey to Budapest before finally heading to the City of Light. An unsolicited but prudent suggestion from the pilot warning Anne against flying due to a lingering ear infection turns out to be fortuitous, as her husband’s producing partner, Jacques (Arnaud Viard), generously offers to drive her to Paris instead.

What begins as a simple and speedy drive soon transforms into a leisurely and indulgent culinary adventure, driven by Jacques’ passion for French cuisine. As they traverse the charming countryside, Jacques captivates Anne with stories of his gastronomic escapades, frequently stopping to relish an enticing selection of local delicacies. His flirtatious demeanor becomes increasingly apparent; however, Anne starts to question his motives, especially when he consistently uses her credit card to cover their extravagant food escapades.

Their journey also includes a heartfelt visit to the 11th-century Romanesque Basilica of St. Magdalene in Vezelay, France, where Anne finds peace and pays homage to the child she lost. During a romantic dinner, Jacques expresses admiration for Anne’s photography, leading her to reflect on why she has yet to share her passion with her husband.

As their adventure continues, Jacques opens up to Anne about the profound sadness surrounding his brother’s suicide, revealing that he alone understands the truth behind his nephew’s agony. This deeply personal moment of vulnerability brings them closer together, and as they finally reach Anne’s destination, just moments before they almost share a kiss, fate conspicuously intervenes when the elevator doors close between them.

Following Jacques’ departure, Anne finds herself contemplating their brief yet poignant connection. However, he soon reappears, sealing their bond with a passionate kiss and inviting her to join him in San Francisco, which fills her with a blend of excitement and anticipation.

The next morning, as Michael prepares to arrive in Paris, Anne receives a thoughtful package from Jacques, containing exquisite chocolate roses alongside the money she lent him during their travels. The accompanying note serves as a delightful reminder of their upcoming encounter at a specified restaurant, prompting Anne to smile brightly at the camera, fully embracing the delightful and unforeseen direction her life has taken.
