Charlie Richard Bakalyan is a paratrooper who becomes the target of ridicule from Ace Jack Hogan after he remains still during an attempted ambush on a group of German soldiers. This misjudgment fuels the unit’s scorn, especially when Charlie accidentally kills Cowboy James Beck, a friend who was wearing a German uniform to infiltrate enemy lines and was apparently pointing a gun at the rest of the squad. Ace, Cowboy’s best friend, threatens Charlie, and the narrative follows their fraught dynamic across the Sicily campaign as Ace makes two separate attempts to kill him, both unsuccessful. In Salerno, Ace delivers a dying curse on Charlie, sealing their turbulent history in the memories of those who serve with them.
Stranded and suspended from a parachute, Charlie carries a vital generator while the Lieutenant Ken Lynch and Sergeant Jimmy Murphy are wounded and the rest of the squad lies dead on the wrong side of a mined road. On the orders of the Lieutenant, Charlie undertakes a perilous clearance of the minefield using hand grenades, a dangerous task that is nearly negated when a dud grenade leaves him stranded and short of his destination. Yet he presses on, pushing himself to the limit as he sacrifices himself to run the final distance and detonate the remaining mine.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of World War II, traversing North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, and it delivers a stark portrait of courage, fear, loyalty, and sacrifice under the bleak pressure of war, where one man’s endurance can alter the fate of those still fighting.
