In the quaint New England town of Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts, a young boy named Norman Babcock possesses a remarkable ability: he can converse with the dead. This extraordinary talent allows him to communicate with his late grandmother and many ghosts residing in the town. Tragically, his family and friends refuse to accept his gift, leading to profound feelings of isolation as he faces ridicule and bullying from his peers.

Despite his struggles, Norman forges a friendship with Neil Downe, an eccentric and overweight boy who also faces his own share of bullying. Neil finds solace in Norman’s honesty about being a medium, and they develop a bond through their shared experiences. Their journey takes a dramatic turn during a rehearsal for a school play designed to commemorate the witch trials that took place in their town 300 years prior. During this rehearsal, Norman experiences a haunting vision of the past where he himself is chased by townsfolk as if he were a witch.

This unsettling vision prompts a visit from his eccentric and estranged uncle, Mr. Prenderghast, who warns Norman that he must perform a sacred ritual to safeguard the town. Initially dismissive of his uncle’s concerns, Norman soon finds himself facing the ghosts of the past — including even the spirit of Prenderghast himself, who emphasizes the urgency of their shared task.

After a series of unfortunate events leaves him feeling despondent, Norman encounters the ghost of Prenderghast in a restroom, who stresses that the ritual requires a special book to be completed before sundown. Gathering his resolve, Norman ventures to Prenderghast’s home to retrieve this book, mistakenly believing that Neil would not comprehend the gravity of his situation.

Upon reaching the graves of the town’s founding figures, including Judge Hopkins — who were supposedly cursed by a wrongfully condemned witch — Norman discovers that the book is nothing but a collection of fairy tales. Just as he begins to process this revelation, he is interrupted by Alvin, a bully who overheard their conversation, complicating matters further as a fierce storm conjured by the witch emerges, causing havoc as the cursed dead rise from their graves and pursue the boys.

As chaos ensues, Norman’s sister, Courtney, joins him along with Neil and his brother, Mitch, in a desperate attempt to evade the zombies. Through clever thinking and teamwork, they manage to connect with a classmate named Salma, who directs them to the archives in Town Hall to uncover the location of the witch’s unmarked grave.

Navigating through the storm and amidst the confusion of the undead, they break into the archives, but time is running out as the mob attacks Town Hall. Overwhelmed with frustration, Norman temporarily distances himself from his friends, inadvertently placing them in danger.

His attempts to read the book are thwarted when the witch channels lightning, knocking him unconscious. In this unconscious state, Norman has a profound dream revealing that the witch was actually Agatha Prenderghast, an innocent girl and fellow medium unjustly condemned by the town’s terrified elite. This tragic history illuminates the path ahead — it’s not enough merely to perform a ritual; he must face Agatha’s ghost to right the wrongs of the past.

Norman bravely seeks out the zombies to guide him to Agatha’s grave but finds himself cornered yet again by the angry mob. Just when all hope seems lost, Courtney acknowledges her brother’s true potential, confronting the crowd and persuading them to cease their assault as the witch storm wreaks destruction all around.

With the guidance of Judge Hopkins, Norman navigates through the chaos into the forest, ultimately arriving at Agatha’s grave, where he confronts her vengeful spirit. In a battle of wills, Agatha tries to repel him, yet Norman asserts his understanding of her pain as an outcast. He endures her fury, demonstrating his empathy and urging her to remember the kindness she once encountered.

Through Norman’s poignant words, Agatha reflects on her past and realizes that harboring bitterness only perpetuates her anguish. Recognizing the warmth of her former self, she finally accepts Norman’s compassion, allowing her spirit to find peace. As dawn breaks and the town begins to heal from the turmoil, Norman resolves to embrace his gift rather than shun it. He accepts Neil’s friendship and, in a heartwarming conclusion, enjoys watching a horror film with the ghost of his grandmother, surrounded by his supportive family.
