Jack Griffith, known as ‘Papa’ to everyone, is a family man in a Texas town whose warmth is matched only by his impulsive streak, especially after a night of drinking. To delight his six-year-old daughter Corinne, he spends the family’s savings to buy his own circus, a grand gesture meant to give her a pony and a world of wonder.
That choice unsettles his elder daughter, Augusta Griffith, who watches as her father’s drunken whims lead to questionable business deals and mounting tension at home. The strain puts a wedge between the Griffiths and even affects her romance with a young man whose father is the local bank president, Mr. Harvey.
