Set in the late Qin dynasty or the early Han period, the film traces a sweeping tale of danger, desire, and hidden loyalties that unfolds across desert sands and crowded cities. In a brutal raid, General Wang Sheng and his troops strike a Xiongnu camp and stumble upon a stunning captive named Xiao Wei, who reveals herself as something far more perilous than a mere prisoner: a fox spirit who feeds on human hearts to stay forever young. Her presence and charm pull Wang Sheng into a dangerous drift between ritual duty and forbidden longing, especially since he is already married to Pei Rong. The desert encounter plants the seed of a forbidden attraction, and soon the crimson thread of fate ties Wang Sheng not only to Xiao Wei but also to Pei Rong, who must navigate her own uneasy mix of love, loyalty, and suspicion.

Meanwhile, a second, intimate triangle takes shape around two powerful figures from Wang Sheng’s world. Pang Yong is a former general who once vied for Pei Rong’s heart but never claimed it; now he finds himself drawn into the same web as Pei Rong and Xiao Bing, a young and determined demon-hunter played by Xia Bing. As a wave of mysterious murders sweeps through the city — victims left with their hearts torn from their chests — Pei Rong grows wary of Xiao Wei’s radiant exterior, especially after a diviner warns that Xiao Wei’s true nature could threaten the very soul of the city. Pei Rong’s fear turns into steadfast resolve when she witnesses Xiao Wei’s uncanny ability to reveal no blood at a skinned moment, a sign that the demon’s disguise may be both perfect and perilous. The stakes rise as Pang Yong encounters Xia Bing and sees a different kind of courage in her: a hunter who believes in protecting humanity even as she fights against the supernatural.

The story deepens as the real motive behind the killings comes into focus. The heart-eating demon is not Xiao Wei, but Xiaoyi, a jealous chameleon spirit who secretly loves Xiao Wei and aids her in gathering the human hearts she needs. Xiaoyi’s power and presence complicate every step the humans take, clashing with Pang Yong’s attempts to shepherd the living into safety. When Pang Yong and Xia Bing confront Wang Sheng’s household at his home, they accuse Xiao Wei of demonhood, even as Xiao Wei maintains her flawless human mask. The tension crescendos as Xiao Wei’s proximity to Wang Sheng ignites old passions and new dangers, ultimately forcing Pei Rong into a choice that could redefine every relationship involved.

As the veil finally lifts, Pei Rong discovers the truth in a raw, painful moment: Xiao Wei and Pei Rong strike a dangerous bargain. Xiao Wei promises to cease killing in exchange for Pei Rong stepping into the place she never could claim — Wang Sheng’s rightful wife — while Pei Rong accepts part of the burden by taking the blame for the murders. Xiao Wei then gives Pei Rong a potion that transforms her hair and features, making her appear demonic in the eyes of the townsfolk. The city’s fear spirals into horror, and just as Pei Rong seems poised to be blamed for the crimes, Pang Yong and Xia Bing arrive to intervene, guiding her to a cave where they might uncover the truth and seek a way to save her.

Time passes as the truth becomes an even heavier alibi. Pang Yong and Xia Bing deduce that Pei Rong has been poisoned by the demon, her life fading as the poison grows lighter and more deadly the paler it becomes. Pei Rong’s strength wanes, and Wang Sheng, with his soldiers and the household — including Xiao Wei — advances toward the cave, torn between his longing for Pei Rong and the chilling reality of the danger Xiao Wei represents. In a moment of searing conflict, Pei Rong sacrifices herself, impaling herself with a dagger while Wang Sheng clings to her, confessing a love that cannot save her. The heartbreak leaves Xiao Wei adrift between love and longing, a shadow among the living who cannot simply choose to remain.

Driven by heartbreak and a grueling sense of duty, Pang Yong confronts Xiao Wei, declaring her to be the real demon, and makes a desperate, fatal strike. Yet Xiao Wei’s strength holds, and Wang Sheng’s wounded heart begs for an impossible mercy: a chance to bring Pei Rong back to life. He asks Xiao Wei what she would gain, and when he answers with a whispered confession of love that remains unfulfilled, he takes his own life. In that instant, Xiao Wei’s true form surfaces, a white fox of power and sorrow, and she pours every ounce of her ancient magic into a fragile orb meant to resurrect the fallen lovers.

But the story twists again as Xiaoyi, ever-jealous and hungry for power, swoops in to snatch the orb, swallowing not just its life-restoring potential but also Xiaoyi’s own powers. Pang Yong and Xia Bing leap into battle once more, a fierce fight that ends with Xiaoyi’s defeat but at a grave cost: Pang Yong falls.

With Pang Yong gone, Xiao Wei recovers the orb of life from Xiaoyi’s remains and uses the other orb containing Xiaoyi’s powers to summon back every soul lost in the cave’s shadowed depths. The last image lingers on Xiao Wei, now standing in her white fox form, stripped of the powers that defined her, having sacrificed those powers to restore Pei Rong and Wang Sheng to life. The film closes on a haunting, hopeful note: love, duty, and the gray area between demon and human can be crossed, but at a price that forever changes the hearts of those who dare to cross it.

In the final arc, the relationships that began in passion and fear are redefined by sacrifice and resilience. The film uses lush battle tableaux and quiet, intimate moments alike to explore how love can coexist with moral ambiguity, and how the courage to do what is right can demand the ultimate cost.
