Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom 2023

In 1972, Rebecca Pan self-financed and starred in Pai Niang Niang, the first Mandarin musical, which ran for 60 performances at the Princess Theatre in Hong Kong. The production uniquely blended Eastern and Western theatrical traditions, adapting the classic Chinese myth, Legend of the White Snake, with a Broadway musical format and incorporating traditional Chinese music, dance, and design alongside modern Western concepts. Though ambitious and culturally significant, the musical wasn't commercially successful and was long believed to have never been filmed. Remarkably, a partial film record of the performance was recently discovered, and the restored footage concludes this documentary.
