Out of the Dark 1988

Suite Nothings is a gritty, neon-lit Los Angeles-set thriller that follows a circle of women who operate a desperate, money-hungry phone-sex hotline, each hoping to break into acting or modeling. The job is unstable and dangerous, drawing them into a world where ambition collides with exploitation, desire, and fear. A psychotic killer dressed in a clown costume, known to locals as Bobo, begins targeting the operators, turning their precarious lives into a nightmare of violence. Into this volatile mix steps Kevin Silvers, Cameron Dye, a photographer who is dating Kristi. The investigation also drags in Dave Stringer, Bud Cort, an accountant who works in the same building and appears to hold pieces of the puzzle that others overlook. Stringer’s presence intensifies the mystery, as the lines between perpetrator and witness blur and the search for truth becomes a maze of misdirection.

The case takes a brutal turn during a brutal night at a sleazy motel, where Bobo murders a prostitute and the trail grows colder and more deadly. Kevin is detained for the motel murder, having helped Kristi flee the scene, and his one phone call is used to direct Kristi to search Stringer’s office for evidence. The search yields a fruitful trail, yet danger multiplies when Stringer discovers Kristi’s intrusion. A tense confrontation erupts, and Kristi is forced to flee as Stringer gives chase through the building, a pursuit that ends abruptly when a passing motorist rams him, leaving the immediate threat momentarily resolved and Kevin’s guilt seemingly diminished by circumstance.

With Kevin briefly cleared by the evidence, Kristi and the now-free man retreat to a remote cabin to sort through the tangled web of lies and motives and to confront the truth about who is hunting whom. There, the chilling revelation lands with a fatal sting: Kevin is the killer—yet the situation escalates as he lunges toward Kristi in a final, desperate bid for control. Kristi fires a pistol they had kept for protection, believing she has neutralized the threat. She turns away, convinced he is dead, only for Kevin to summon one last surge of violence. Just as he lunges again, Lt. Meyers arrives, the shotgun a blunt, decisive instrument, and ends Kevin’s threat once and for all.

The film leaves the audience with a sober meditation on danger, trust, and the price of ambition in a world where vulnerability can invite predation and where even those closest to the victims can become entangled in the darkest acts.
