Marta is a young woman who feels she isn’t conventionally pretty and is fully aware of it. She lives with her best friends, Jacopo and Federica, and, as an orphan, faces a heavy burden: a severe form of cystic fibrosis that could shorten her life because the treatments aren’t working. After a failed attempt on Tinder, her friends take her to a party where she experiences love at first sight with a handsome man named Arturo.
From the very next day, Marta starts following Arturo everywhere. She believes he hasn’t noticed her, but he eventually confronts her and, instead of disappointment, asks for an invitation to dinner. The invitation turns out to be a dinner with her whole family. Marta, bold and unfiltered, details many unusual aspects of her life, yet she does not mention her illness. Arturo feels a flicker of guilt, and the next day he appears at her workplace to ask for a proper date, this time at a fancy restaurant where he often goes with his family. Marta’s opinion of him grows as their connection deepens, and they end up sharing a simple meal at the supermarket where Marta works, before finally spending the night together at her home.
The morning after, Arturo leaves with a touch of embarrassment, but his mother’s critique about bringing home a girl like Marta pushes him to pursue again. He plans another date and they embark on a gondola ride, where he confesses his love. Marta, who should avoid damp environments because of her illness, agrees to continue the relationship but soon becomes unwell and is hospitalized in critical condition. Her doctor explains that a mistake on her part has accelerated her illness, and she is discharged with a grim prognosis. She confronts Arturo and, in an attempt to shield him, pretends she isn’t in love with him and suggests she should leave him.
That night, Arturo attends a party and kisses Beatrice, yet his feelings for Marta remain. Beatrice, however, reveals the truth about the night before, helping Marta see the real circumstances. Marta then rushes to the rowing club to reconnect with Arturo, where she finally tells him the full truth. Arturo, hurt by his silence but still hopeful, then reveals that he has found a new experimental cure for her illness, offering a 19% chance of survival. He also commits to fulfilling a lifelong fixation: staging a wedding and inviting everyone close to them to the pretend ceremony, an act that binds their fragile optimism to a shared future.
