Rich Sadie Patch finds herself stranded on a desert island after a cruise‑ship emergency. She is joined by the gruff Irish stoker Pat, the prickly young Jimmy Carrol, and the bald, bookish Professor Gibble, each convinced they have the best chance of rescue. A ship collision leaves four survivors from an ocean liner stranded on a desert island: Sadie Patch, a spoiled heiress; Jimmy Carrol, a determined journalist; Professor Gibble, a thoughtful lecturer; and Pat Plunkett, a practical ship’s stoker.
Carrol falls in love with Sadie, and she responds with a kiss, while Gibble also falls for her, creating a tense triangle that unsettles the island community. Rivalry and longing begin to color daily life as resources grow scarce and the need for cooperation becomes clear. The dynamics among the four survivors become more complicated as misunderstandings creep in.
Gibble notices Pat and Sadie’s proximity through a series of misread signals, while Pat, in a moment of weakness, discovers a bottle of rum and succumbs to drinking. On the surface, the group tries to maintain order, but the emotional strain begins to erode the civic framework they attempt to build on the lonely shore. Sadie, sensing the power dynamics shifting, steps into a leadership role and tries to steer the group through the crisis.
When the men threaten to strike, Sadie declares that the island will never function unless she marries one of them, asserting control over the dwindling social order. A game of chance—straws drawn to decide who will stand as her husband—ensues, and Gibble draws the short straw, yet he balks at the arrangement and attempts to back out in favor of Pat. Just as the tension reaches a breaking point, a ship appears and the group is rescued.
Back aboard the rescue vessel, tensions flare anew as Gibble and Carrol both express their affection for Sadie. Yet Sadie’s feelings are tangled: she loves Pat, but Pat resists the idea of a marriage that would demand incompatible differences between them. She tries to persuade the ship’s captain that Pat is bound to marry her, but fate intervenes when the ship ultimately sinks before any union can occur. In the aftermath, Sadie returns to the sea-washed shore and, in a turn that echoes the island’s isolation, wades ashore at the very island where Pat has already arrived, locking their fates together once again.
