In early 19th century Russia, a bored St. Petersburg socialite, Onegin, Ralph Fiennes inherits his uncle’s country estate. There, he encounters a neighboring landowner and aspiring poet, Lensky, and a widowed mother with her two daughters. The elder daughter, Olga, has his attention, while her sister, Tatiana, Liv Tyler (Tanya) writes him a passionate letter, hoping for something more. He rejects her, citing youth and inexperience. Instead, he dances with Olga, a choice that Lensky reads as flirtation, inflaming his pride and nurturing a growing tension between the two friends.
