Once Before I Die 1966

Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese strike the Philippines, shredding any illusion of safety for a tight-knit group of polo-playing soldiers from the US 26th Cavalry Regiment and their families. The chaos of war quickly threads its way through their lives, turning a leisure game into a pull between duty, fear, and survival.

Major Bailey John Derek orders his Swiss fiancée Alex Ursula Andress to leave the country, promising to meet her in San Francisco. The decision slams them into a tense farewell, set against a backdrop of rapidly deteriorating escape routes. Bailey leads his men back toward Manila, but the road network is clogged with fugitives, among them Alex, who delays her return home to take care of a beloved pet dog and to cling to a sliver of hope for reunion.

On the road, Bailey’s unit makes a brutal stand when a Japanese pilot parachutes from a damaged aircraft and is shot down—an early, grim reminder of the war’s reach. As the convoy presses on, it becomes starkly clear that Lt. Custer Richard Jaeckel is a figure who seems to revel in the violence of conflict, his cold demeanor underscoring the film’s darker mood. The tension peaks when Bailey guides his exhausted squad to a house under siege, and he sends Alex away to safety, though not before she witnesses the tragic, accidental killing of Bailey by an exploding hand grenade.
