On a sun-soaked Hawaiian tropical island, Rosalind Reynolds, Esther Williams, a swimming sensation, headlines a film with her fiancé, Ricardo Montez Ricardo Montalban. The project includes U.S. Navy Lt. Lawrence Y. Kingslee Peter Lawford, the film’s military technical adviser, who soon finds himself drawn to Rosalind. Yvonne Torro, Cyd Charisse, Rosalind’s best friend and fellow star, secretly wants Ricardo for herself. The behind-the-scenes world of filmmaking blends with the island’s lush scenery, setting the stage for romance and danger.
Three years earlier, Larry met Rosalind during a USO show at his Pacific base, and that memory resurfaces as their paths cross again on set. After sharing a kiss, Larry makes no secret of wanting to spirit Rosalind away on his aircraft. At the Royal Aloha hotel, the film crew is treated to a lively performance by real-life orchestra leader Xavier Cugat and his orchestra, adding a splash of musical glamour to the proceedings.
On the day of a key scene where Rosalind flies over the set, Larry seizes the chance to fly to the island where they first met, hoping for another kiss that would seal his claim. He returns to their aircraft with his feelings confirmed, only to discover that the natives have stolen parts and stranded them on the island.
Meanwhile, her fiancé and the search party he formed are captured by the cannibals who inhabit the tropical isle, but are saved by his rival. The entanglements grow denser as loyalties are tested against a backdrop of peril and splendor.
With events spiraling, Rosalind takes the blame for the unauthorized flight to the island in a bid to shield Kingslee from a court-martial. The truth about Yvonne’s romance emerges: she has become involved with Ricardo, creating a new layer of tension. In the end, Larry and Rosalind realize they are in love, while Yvonne’s involvement with Ricardo reshapes the circle of affections and settles into a bittersweet, hopeful note.
