Miss Pudd Katharine Hepburn is a spirited, eccentric owner who treats what she calls an antiques shop as a kind of sentimental treasure trove. To her, every item holds a memory or a piece of history, and she often resists parting with them, even when others would deem many of them junk. Yet her warmth shines through as she agrees to lend some pieces to two boys, Albie Kevin McKenzie and Chris Dennis Dimster, who quickly befriend her.

The boys explain that they’re working on restoring an old hot air balloon that belonged to Albie’s grandfather, a daring stuntman known as The Great Sandusky. They want to honor his memory and celebrate his birthday by taking the balloon aloft. Their plan is touched by nostalgia and adventure, a bridge between eras as they tinker with the balloon and share stories of the grandfather’s fearless days.

A twist of fate erupts into their plan when the balloon is accidentally inflated and sent skyward with the two boys and their loyal English sheepdog aboard. Miss Pudd takes up the chase in her vintage car, clinging onto the dangling anchor as the basket rises. She’s eventually hauled back aboard, and the balloon, free of control, drifts away into a thick fog that swallows the night.

That fog becomes a road to Los Angeles, where the surreal journey culminates in an unexpected arrival over a bustling city. The balloon descends, and a police helicopter demands a landing, but the craft instead touches down on the stage of the Hollywood Bowl during an open-air concert. The orchestra is amid a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, and fireworks illuminate the sky as the scene unfolds. The audience—caught between astonishment and amusement—believes the unplanned landing is part of the show, and they are captivated by the ragtag crew as they disembark and are sent back to their ordinary lives, ending the night with a mix of wonder and relief.
