Blue Valley Songbird 1999

Leanna Taylor, Dolly Parton is a country singer who longs to break free from the tight grip of her controlling manager and boyfriend, Hank, John Terry. The pressure of his jealousy and his demand that she stay within his orbit pushes her toward a deeper, more personal reckoning with her past. With the steadfast support of her guitarist Bobby, Billy Dean, Leanna begins to face memories that have haunted her for years, including the death of her father.

Through a sequence of flashbacks, we learn about Leanna’s father, Bob Morrison, an abusive and controlling man who would not allow her to sing for anyone but himself. In one memory, he viciously attacks a boy Leanna is playing with; in another, he threatens her after she hits him with a tire iron while he is abusing Leanna’s mother. These fragments illuminate the roots of Leanna’s fear and the urgent pull to escape.

Her estranged mother is part of the painful history as memories surface of a family torn apart by fear. After years of trouble, Leanna’s mother eventually sends her off to Nashville, where, free of her father, she finds a path in a church choir.

In the present, Leanna seizes a chance to break away from Hank and begins to reconcile with her mother, each step guiding her toward a fresh start in the recording studio.

The finale finds Leanna stepping into the studio to cut her first record, and the film closes on a live performance of Blue Valley Songbird, with Hank watching from the back of the room before he leaves, leaving the audience with a quiet sense of resolution and a doorway to whatever comes next.
