Of Love and Other Demons (2009): Cast, Box Office & Plot

In 18th‑century colonial Colombia, a period defined by intense religious intolerance under the Holy Inquisition and the harsh realities of slavery, the narrative centers on a remarkable young girl: Sierva María. At just 13 years old, she is a Spanish aristocrat who has been raised among the enslaved people of Cartagena de Indias, learning from those who serve her household and from the rich tapestry of African traditions that shape her curiosity about the world. She longs to understand everyday experiences—like what a kiss tastes like—an innocent question that highlights the gap between her upbringing and the world she encounters outside the family’s walls. Her life unfolds against the heat of a port city where cultures collide and the boundaries of class, race, and faith are constantly tested.
