Stephen, a talented college tennis player, is kicked off his team after his crush on fellow player Shelly, Gail O’Grady, makes it hard for him to stay focused during practice. His friends, Patrick Breen as Andy and Kim Flowers as Jackie, hatch a bold plan to help him regain his spot by presenting him to Shelly under a new female identity: Stephanie, the transfer student, embodied by Chad Lowe.

To pull it off, Stephen adopts the role of Stephanie and sets out to prove himself on the women’s tennis team. He sneaks into the locker room, trains without raising suspicion, and earns a spot on the squad after a tense, convincing tryout. The cross-dressing ruse becomes a full-on double life as he attends classes and practices both as himself and as Stephanie, balancing the demands of coursework with the pressures of keeping his deception hidden. The plan gains momentum when Shelly asks Stephanie to become her new roommate, hoping to keep an aggressive boyfriend from moving in with her, and he agrees to the arrangement, moving between two rooms and two identities with careful improvisation.

As the ruse deepens, Stephen navigates a smooth front of normalcy, narrowly avoiding detection on several occasions—such as during a medical exam that could have blown his cover. The challenge intensifies when Shelly eventually learns of the scheme after an everyday moment that reveals the truth: she catches him urinating standing up. Heartbroken and betrayed, she confronts him, and the pair decide to cover the truth with a plausible story—Stephanie has moved home to Europe due to illness in the family—so Stephen can continue to pursue his place on the team without upsetting Shelly or arousing further suspicion.

Meanwhile, Andy’s stake in the plan grows as he bets money on a crucial match, hoping to keep Stephen on the team. The tension peaks when Stephen faces a plagiarism scare after submitting the same barely-modified essay under both identities, threatening his eligibility. Andy steps in to salvage the situation, dressing up as Stephanie to take the blame and clear Stephen’s name, a move that reinforces their bond and tests their loyalty.

With the danger behind them, Stephen reenters the competition in his female guise to join Shelly for the big match, and the two finally admit their love for each other. A talent scout in the audience is impressed by what he sees and approaches Andy—who claims to be their manager—about signing both players to an international women’s tennis career. The match ends in a victorious win, and the crowd erupts in celebration as they share a kiss, signaling the beginning of a potential professional partnership.
