Sam Collins, a highly skilled computer hacker portrayed by Michael Beach, finds himself on probation and restricted from accessing the internet. Despite these limitations, he continues to indulge in petty crimes such as stealing from mailboxes, while working at a local dessert shop. His accomplice, formerly known as Stanley but now going by David and claiming to have experienced a spiritual awakening, shares his enthusiasm for a new beginning. Sam’s interest gets personal when he comes across a letter written by Josie, a woman he becomes intrigued by, addressed to her late Marine husband. When he steals and reads her letters, he becomes fixated on her, eventually beginning to stalk her, stealing additional letters, and gathering the courage to contact her directly.

Meanwhile, Agent Ames is profiling Sam and suspects him of stealing Bitcoins—digital currency that was actually taken by David/Stanley, who is also caught up in the web of theft. The situation escalates when FBI agent Ames starts pushing for Sam to relinquish the stolen Bitcoins, and in the process, he increases pressure on Sam. As the investigation heats up, Sam’s efforts to connect with Josie develop into tentative dating, adding a layer of emotional complexity to his life.

Sam’s illegal activities come to a head when he performs a bold act: he executes a social media attack to demonstrate his hacking skills to potential employers, adventurous enough to bypass his probation’s restrictions on internet use. This reckless move results in Harry, Sam’s parole officer, Michael Beach, scolding him for risking everything. Consequently, FBI agent Ames intensifies his pursuit for the missing Bitcoins, which leads to him discovering that his own personal Bitcoin wallet has been emptied, forcing him to hunt for clues.

During this turbulent period, Sam attempts to apologize to Josie, but his secretive hacking and thefts have left her feeling betrayed. Her doubts grow when she learns about Sam’s involvement in mail theft, leading to his arrest by Raymond J. Barry for that crime. Sam’s arrest isn’t the end of the turmoil, as Harry and police reinforcements rush into the scene, and Ames is soon arrested himself for money laundering.

There is a touching moment when Jack, Josie’s father, provides comfort to Josie. He reveals that her heartfelt letters to her deceased husband, all addressed to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, were returned because the tomb receives no mail, a detail Josie was unaware of. Jack had kept these letters in a special box after setting up a post office box for their safe return.

Meanwhile, Harry advocates for Sam’s early parole, believing in his potential for redemption. In an act of courage and reflection, David—who has now reverted to his real name, Stanley—hacks into the Department of Justice’s system to email Harry, taking responsibility for his past crimes, including the mail thefts that affected Josie. This gesture of remorse sparks a connection between them.

Later, Sam visits Josie at her workplace, aiming to clarify his actions. However, Josie feels violated and betrayed by his hacking, leading her to consider a fresh start elsewhere. She shares her plans to move to Nashville to enroll her daughter Daisy in a specialized school. Shortly afterward, Josie receives an anonymous scholarship covering Daisy’s tuition, allowing the family—Josie, her father Jack, and Daisy—to relocate smoothly.

In pursuit of a new beginning, Sam decides to enlist in the Army, eager to use his exceptional hacking skills for good while helping others. He successfully passes the enlistment process, and while writing a heartfelt letter to Josie, she receives it with a warm smile. Her faith in him rekindles as she begins to believe he is on the path to becoming the man he aspires to be and finally achieving redemption.
