Good Sam 1948

Sam Clayton [Gary Cooper] is a department store manager whose life is shaped by a sermon from Rev. Daniels [Ray Collins], nudging him toward helping others in every way he can. He reaches beyond his own family to support Lu Clayton [Ann Sheridan] and her brother Claude, who has been living with them rent-free for six months, as well as their neighbors the Butlers, who need a car for a vacation after theirs breaks down.

In his role at the store, Sam becomes a steady confidant to Shirley Mae [Joan Lorring], a clerk whose romance has just fallen apart, and he extends a $5,000 loan to Mr. and Mrs. Adams (the Adamses) to save the gas station they bought, all without telling his wife.

Lu grows increasingly frustrated with Sam’s generosity, especially when he ends up paying for the Butlers’ car repairs and even hosting the mechanic for home-cooked meals. The tension spikes when the family has a chance to put a down payment on a new house, but Sam has already lent their nest egg to the Adamses.

Sam is not without his own doubts. He resents the burden of the Butlers’ troubles and the ongoing effort to keep Claude in the house, while Shirley Mae’s overdose forces him to face the human cost of his benevolence.

The Adamses eventually surprise him with a check for $6,000 to repay the loan, yet Sam uses part of that money to fund the store’s annual Christmas charity dinner after he is robbed of funds he had collected, and the bank refuses to grant him a loan. He ends up in a bar, drinking heavily, until a Salvation Army marching band fills the air with Christmas songs and brings him back home.

Back at the store, the bank manager’s promise of a loan remains uncertain, but H.C. Borden [Edmund Lowe] later reveals a different kind of recognition, surprising Sam with a promotion to vice-president of the store.
