In Phoenix, Arizona, an 18-year-old wrestler Bobby Tennison begins talking to his 16-year-old classmate Stacy Collins, pulling her and her friends into a late-night lake party where secrets start to surface. As the night unfolds, the two discover that both of their fathers abandoned them, a revelation that foreshadows the trouble ahead. Meanwhile, Stacy’s mother, Laura Collins, is involved with Rod Merredi, a man whose emotional abuse adds another layer of instability to Stacy’s world.

From the start, Bobby grows possessive. He wants Stacy to be home at night when he calls and to avoid hanging out with anyone else whenever they’re together. He alternates between bad temper and tenderness—apologizing after an outburst, insisting he loves her, and showering her with gifts—creating a confusing push-and-pull dynamic that Stacy finds hard to navigate.

Painful truths begin to emerge. While shopping with her best friend Nicki, Stacy reveals bruises on her back from the night she “slipped” into a sexual encounter with Bobby, a memory that won’t stay hidden for long. At school, a boy’s simple compliment about Stacy’s appearance triggers a cruel confrontation from Bobby, who degrades her by calling her a slut and forcing her to change into looser clothes. The cycle of control deepens when Coach Murphy considers reporting the incident, but Stacy defends Bobby by saying she was at fault.

As Bobby tightens his grip, Stacy’s world slides further from freedom. She starts missing events because Bobby limits her time with friends, and Nicki learns that Bobby’s last girlfriend, Toni, changed schools after a similar pattern of abuse. More bruises surface on Stacy’s arm, but she insists she can handle it, even as the reality grows darker.

A fateful encounter occurs when Stacy accidentally crosses paths with Rita Thompson, Bobby’s mother, whom he forbade her to meet. After Bobby catches them talking, he violently slams Stacy into a truck, shattering any remaining illusion of safety. Hurt and conflicted, Stacy refuses to see him again, but Bobby cunningly re-enters her life by playing on shared pain—recounting stories of his abusive father to coax her back into the relationship.

They attend a school dance, where Bobby again lashes out after spotting Stacy talking to another boy, pulling her into the parking lot and slapping her to reaffirm control. Nicki grows more worried; Stacy, however, defends him, insisting he has endured a lot of hardship. That night, Laura ends her relationship with Rod, and Stacy decides to break things off with Bobby as well.

A glimmer of fear appears when Carla, a mutual friend who once loved Bobby, tries to make plans with him. He manipulates the situation, suggesting a hangout at his place with Carla present, only to accuse Stacy of seeing another guy and repeat the abuse with a brutal slap. In private, he kisses Carla and fabricates a story that they fought and she left, an attempt to erase Stacy from memory.

Soon after, Bobby, accompanied by Vince Fortner, lures Stacy into a car ride, driving to the lake where he walks away with her while Vince waits. The next day, Stacy is reported missing. Laura and Nicki search frantically, and Laura finds Stacy’s purse hidden in Bobby’s room, triggering a public display of concern that hides Bobby’s calculated manipulation. Nicki questions Carla again, and Carla repeats Bobby’s version of events, until she eventually admits that Bobby and Vince took Stacy to the lake.

The investigation tightens. Bobby and Vince are arrested; Bobby tries to pin the disappearance on Vince, but the truth surfaces as Bobby is revealed to be the last person with Stacy. Cornered, Bobby confesses that he slit Stacy’s throat when she refused to resume the relationship, a chilling admission that confirms Stacy’s death.

Stacy’s body is recovered from the lake, wrapped in a trash bag and chained to the bottom with cinder blocks. A courtroom drama follows, where many classmates acknowledge witnessing Bobby’s abuse and their own inaction. The trial ends with Bobby convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. In a pointed moment of reckoning, the judge lectures the students on the consequences of remaining silent in the face of abuse, underscoring the film’s social message about bystander inaction and accountability in the face of violence.
