In a tense, unnamed Southeast Asian country (likely Laos, Thailand, or Burma), a calm night shatters as gunfire erupts during a meeting between the Prime Minister and a foreign diplomat. Moments later, their lifeless bodies lay at the feet of armed rebels sporting red scarves. In a desperate act of survival, a security agent, facing overwhelming odds, takes his own life.

Seventeen hours earlier, Jack Dwyer, portrayed by Owen Wilson, embarks on a journey with his wife, Annie, played by Lake Bell, and their two daughters, Lucy and Beeze, as they fly to this tumultuous nation for Jack’s new job with Cardiff. Onboard the flight, they encounter an enigmatic Englishman named Hammond, characterized by Pierce Brosnan. Beeze inquires about the scars on Hammond’s hands and face, leading him to spin a tall tale involving a tiger fight and an unfortunate tumble down the stairs.

Upon arrival, the Dwyers assume their lodging at a hotel, where Jack finds Annie in distress over their abrupt relocation. Attempting to lighten the mood and connect with her, he seeks distraction, only to discover the city’s cable and internet are down. A visit to a nearby bar reveals Hammond and a local man, Kenny Roger, portrayed by Sahajak Boonthanakit, indulging in drinks and karaoke.

The following morning unfolds with Jack’s search for a newspaper, only for him to find one that is already three days old. Outside, he is suddenly swept into chaos, witnessing a massive mob of armed civilians confronted by a line of riot police. As tensions flare, he narrowly escapes the violence, only to return to the hotel and see a chilling execution of another Cardiff employee at the hands of the rebels. In a frantic race against time, Jack descends into panic and urgency as he realizes he must save his family.

As Jack rushes to their hotel room, he learns that Lucy has wandered off to the pool. Amidst the mayhem of violent rebels breaking into rooms, Annie bravely holds the door shut, trying to shield her youngest daughter, Beeze, from the impending danger. Jack heroically locates Lucy, just as the rebels close in, and the family’s frantic escape takes them to the rooftop, where a small group of terrified foreigners gathers, stricken by the rebels’ hostility.

An ominous chant from outside reveals the rebels’ motives: protests against foreign corporations exploiting the region’s water supply. Misguided hope sparks momentarily as a helicopter appears, only for it to be filled with more rebels. As Jack prepares for his next move, Annie distracts the attackers, showcasing remarkable strength and love amidst the horror. Their ally, Hammond, rises to the occasion, battling the rebels but suffering grievously in the process.

After a harrowing escape, the Dwyers find themselves by the riverbank, where Jack barters with a fisherman for a boat and must confront remaining rebel forces to ensure his family’s safety. In a climactic showdown, bravery shines through as Jack, Annie, and their daughters fight for their lives, culminating in a desperate race across the river as the threats of violence loom ever closer.

Finally, they cross into Vietnamese territory, evading the enemy just in time. The family finds themselves recuperating in a hospital bed, with Lucy amusingly requesting the tale of her birth. They reflect together on the strength forged in the face of terror, united as they embrace their newfound hope and safety.
