National Selvam, Udhayanidhi Stalin, is a small-time photographer who runs a digital photography studio in Tenkasi with his father, National Shanmugham, J. Mahendran. Next to the studio sits a flex-board printing shop owned by Selvam’s friend Sadha, M. S. Bhaskar. His assistant Vigadakavi, Karunakaran, designs the bright flex-boards that light up the town’s streets. Selvam is in a relationship with Shenbaghavalli, his high school sweetheart, Parvatii Nair.
Shenbaghavalli’s mother, Maala Parvathi, keeps a watchful eye on the couple as life in the town unfolds around the photography studio and the printing shop. A casual confrontation in the town center pulls Selvam into a storm he did not seek. Sadha is drawn into a petty dispute with a loafer, and though bystanders intervene, Vigadakavi rushes in to strike the man who challenged Sadha. The aggressor, backed by a rough character named Vellaiyappan, retaliates against Vigadakavi. Selvam steps in to calm the mounting chaos, but Vellaiyappan, angered by Selvam’s attempts to control the situation, delivers a vicious blow. Shanmugham steps in to separate them, leaving Selvam humiliated and vowing revenge. In a stubborn pledge, he swears he will not wear slippers again until he has avenged this humiliation.
The fallout strains Selvam’s life, and Shenbaghavalli is compelled to end their relationship. Yet Selvam learns that Vellaiyappan may be within reach once more when Vigadakavi mentions his possible whereabouts. He tracks Vellaiyappan to a local garage where the man is said to work as a welder. The garage owner tells him Vellaiyappan has left for a better opportunity in Dubai, a fact that colors Selvam’s pursuit with both regret and resolve. Sadha advises him to let the matter go, but Selvam chooses to wait for Vellaiyappan’s return. His commitment nudges him toward a new discipline, and he enrolls in a kung fu course, hoping to prepare himself for whatever may come.
Meanwhile, Malarvizhi, a college student, arrives at Selvam’s studio seeking a different kind of recognition. She wants to participate in a women’s magazine cover photo competition and asks Selvam to craft a look that pops for the page. The request puzzles him at first, and her impatience tests his confidence as a photographer. Seeking guidance, he turns to his father, who speaks about photography as an art that balances moment, light, and angle. This prompts Selvam to study his father’s photographs more intently, learning how to harness angles and lighting in new ways. He experiments with motion in his photographs and finally captures a striking image of Malarvizhi that stands out to the magazine.
When Malarvizhi visits Selvam with the magazine, she rails against being photographed without proper permission, yet she also admires the photo’s impact. The exchange deepens their connection, and they soon fall in love. Malarvizhi reveals a crucial detail that heightens the tension: she is Vellaiyappan’s younger sister. This revelation stirs Selvam, but his affection for Malarvizhi remains strong enough to push him forward.
Vellaiyappan’s life takes a downturn when he is fired for slapping his manager and is deported back to India. The next day, Selvam and Sadha challenge him to a hand-to-hand fight. After a tense, rapid exchange, Selvam gains control and pins Vellaiyappan, while Sadha proclaims the winner of the contest. The victory formalizes a turning point: Selvam visits Vellaiyappan in the hospital and introduces himself to Vellaiyappan’s mother, in front of Malarvizhi. He then asks for Vellaiyappan’s blessing to wed his sister, a moment that leaves both Vellaiyappan and his mother surprised but reflective. The story closes with Selvam and Malarvizhi united, the quiet town quietly bearing witness to a romance that endured through conflict and time.
