In the opening sequence, amid questions about recent UFO sightings over Arizona, Senator John McCain acknowledges the reports but admits there’s no clear explanation for the legendary “Phoenix Lights.” As the credits roll, a wounded, panicked woman races through the woods to a cabin, her attempts to reach safety thwarted by unsettling sounds and a looming presence that shadows her every move. The scene cuts to black, leaving a chilling first impression of danger and mystery.

A flashback then introduces the core group of travelers: five friends (Joe, Lily, Molly, June and Matt) heading toward Las Vegas in an RV. Matt, behind the wheel, has gotten them lost on back roads, sparking light-hearted ribbing from the others and a running joke about chasing the American Dream by roaming the country. As night deepens, a mysterious light blooms in the sky, and Molly’s sleep is punctured by a shadowy figure that vanishes as soon as she wakes. Relieved, she steps outside to find the figure again, only to realize it was a nightmare—until a second, more urgent sighting returns her to the front of the RV with the others.

Haze and wonder settle as seven lights blaze in a row above the desert, drawing the group’s attention. The radio crackles to life with static and a warning alarm, and June becomes increasingly unsettled by Matt’s decision to push forward despite the eerie phenomenon. A close call with a truck forces Matt to brake hard, nearly missing a collision; he blames the other driver, sparking a brawl that June intervenes in, revealing that Joe is badly injured, his shoulder pierced by a large knife. The truck driver, who reveals himself as a medical-trained veteran named Richard, steps in to stabilize Joe with a makeshift wound care kit and calm reassurance. The tension between Matt and Richard lingers, while Molly and Lily try to steady their nerves as unseen observers circle from the shadows.

In a tense exchange, Richard recounts a troubling detail: before the crash, his own vehicle shut down, cutting him off from help. He shares a fragment of his past—he’s a Gulf War POW who bears the scars of PTSD and is a recovering alcoholic—to help Molly understand the gravity of their situation and the fragility of trust in the night’s phenomena. As they work on the RV, Matt notes noises emerging from the woods—an otherworldly clicking that seems to creep closer with each attempt to salvage the vehicle.

Desperation grows as a second, more alarming mystery unfolds: a figure lurks near the trees, watching, unseen. Matt ventures into the woods in search of Lily, and the eerie soundscape closes in. An unseen entity makes its presence known, and the camera hints at an abduction or attack as Matt disappears from sight. Back at the RV, Lily steps outside to investigate the odd noises, only to find Matt alive in a moment of warmth and apology—yet he is unable to share the truth about what he’s seen. Lily’s whispered revelation about a baby she plans to have with Matt raises the stakes of their fragile relationships, just as June calls Lily to the bedroom where Joe’s condition worsens.

With Joe bleeding heavily and an urgent need for hospital care, Richard proposes leaving the desolate outpost to seek help, while Matt and Lily stay behind with Molly, June, and Joe. They decide to flag down a passing vehicle or seek shelter at a nearby cabin. The drive toward safety is interrupted when Richard notices that Matt has vanished, and the same eerie clicking noises escalate in the distance. Richard, now alone, moves toward a cabin, pursuing the hope of rescue and a return to normalcy.

A sudden flash reveals an alien figure behind Richard, and a hail of gunfire follows as Richard shoots—only to realize that he has killed Matt. Grief-stricken, he points the weapon at his own head, contemplating a similar fate. The revelation shatters the group’s fragile security, and Molly and Lily discover that the radio broadcast may have been a distorted whisper from Matt’s voice begging for help. The RV’s lights malfunction, and Molly is abruptly pulled upward by a beam of green light, vanishing from sight.

Richard and Lily race back inside as the roof sounds close and the aliens begin to descend. Despite Richard’s efforts to barricade the doors and windows, the extraterrestrial attackers breach the RV, abduct Joe’s companions, and seize control of the remains of the night. Lily, pursued by the otherworldly force, seeks refuge in a cabin, while the RV and truck are eventually beamed away into the night.

Richard regains consciousness in the alien craft, where Lily’s terrified screams echo through the hull. The aliens cut away the distance between them, and Lily reveals that her baby has been taken. Richard, grappling with a moral cliff, receives a chilling, impossible choice: shoot Lily to end her suffering or face the prospect of losing her to the unknown. In a moment of shared sorrow and heartbreak, Lily urges him to pull the trigger; he does so with a heavy heart, and the aliens respond by restraining him and subjecting him to their brutal experiments. The screen fades to black as his agonized cries fade into the void.

In the aftermath, a police officer discovers a desolate landscape and finds Richard wandering in a semi-catatonic state. An epilogue text reveals that Richard was found roughly 100 miles from the broken-down truck and the RV, rehabilitated through therapy, and left with only fragments of memory from that fateful night. No trace of the other victims or their vehicles is ever recovered, while the lights over Phoenix continue to appear, lingering as a haunting reminder that the night’s events may never truly end.
