A young woman, Sally Raynor, is acquitted of the murder of her husband, whose death remains shrouded in suspicion. The film unfolds through a measured flashback that retraces the events leading up to that death. Sally’s aviator husband Martin has been missing for two years and is believed dead, during which time she has grown close to a local doctor, John Harper, whom she plans to marry. The tension between past and present drives a quiet, methodical drama as memories surface and loyalties waver.
[Martin] unexpectedly returns from Brazil, alive but deeply altered after being held captive by an Amazonian tribe. He escapes, only to witness the deaths of his companions in the jungle, a brutality that marks him profoundly. Back home, Sally finds herself drawn back toward Martin, deciding to abandon the wedding plans with the doctor and return to life with the man she thought she would never see again, even though their marriage had never been easy.
Over the ensuing six months, Martin’s erratic behavior—shaped by his ordeal—feeds Sally’s doubt and fear. A close family friend, Arthur ‘Glan’ Glanville, along with Dr John Harper and the family’s housekeeper, begins to recognize that something dangerous lurks beneath Martin’s surface. His mother, Emily Raynor, also notices the turmoil, yet she chooses to ignore the more troubling signs.
A turning point arrives on one of Martin’s wild nocturnal walks when he attacks a man, an act that leaves the victim alive only by luck. Glan uncovers the incident and presses Sally to secure immediate treatment for Martin to prevent him from being jailed. Sally asks him to consent to treatment, but the fear of losing his freedom—reminiscent of what happened in Brazil—tightens its grip, and she hesitates. In a desperate moment, she contemplates an overdose of sleeping tablets to shield him from society’s punishment, but she cannot go through with it.
Tragically, Martin dies by suicide, and Sally is charged with his murder. Glan believes in her innocence, yet Martin’s mother remains convinced of her guilt, having witnessed her son attack Sally. Although a jury later clears her of murder, the ordeal leaves lasting scars. In the aftermath, Sally is not freed from doubt or the weight of guilt, and she remains hesitant to marry the doctor she loves, choosing instead to carry the memories of the case as a quiet, unresolved tension between duty, love, and personal redemption.
