On Thanksgiving Day, Robert Woodward visits his ailing wife at a nursing home, while Catherine Howard, whose husband recently died, winds up at the same facility. The two, who have lived just miles apart for years, meet for the first time and discover a shared sense of loneliness, a quiet connection blooming even in the sterile corridors of care.
An approaching blizzard closes in, and Catherine offers to drive Robert home when she learns he is stranded. The ride starts with a prickly exchange as she struggles to maneuver through the worsening storm while he provides brisk instructions. The car slides off the road and into a snow bank, forcing them to trek through the whiteout and seek shelter in an empty cabin to wait out the storm, alone together in a stark, wintry world.
The next morning, they are discovered by one of his daughters, Lori, and her husband, who drive Catherine back to her home. The abrupt proximity slowly gives way to a growing trust as they reflect on loss, resilience, and the unexpected warmth that can bloom in the midst of cold weather.
On the following Sunday, Catherine drives to Murray’s, a restaurant that she and Robert frequent, and she orders his suggested chocolate chip pancakes while waiting for him. Murray also makes his way to Murray’s, but a call arrives saying his wife has fallen ill again, and he heads to the hospital.
That same day, Robert hosts the wake for his wife, with both of his daughters present. Lori sits on the kitchen floor crying, and her sister Jaclyn Woodward comes over to offer comfort to soothe the ache in the family.
Later, Catherine receives a call about a woman in troubled labor and rushes to the hospital, only to discover that it is Robert who had requested her presence. She understands his wish and steps inside to help the new mother, offering calm support in the tense moment.
Robert asks Catherine if she went to the diner that Sunday; she lies, saying that she hadn’t, claiming she’d been too busy. Then he reveals that his wife died that day. At his SUV, he pulls out a box containing a necklace, the very one Catherine had lost earlier, and he shows her the scarf she had tied on the tree near the spot where she dropped it.
With Christmas Day off, Catherine has a rare chance to slow down, and Robert leads her through the icy roads to a cabin he keeps as an emergency vacation home in case he ever gets stranded again. Their path brings them to the same snowy crossroads as before; they reach the cabin to find smoke curling from the chimney. Robert explains he bought the cabin as a shelter for just such moments, and the two share a hopeful, lingering kiss in the living room as the snow falls softly outside.
