Harry Fabian, a cunning American tout and con artist, is tirelessly pursuing his ambitions in the bustling city of London. His life is marked by dysfunctional relationships, notably with the honest and devoted Mary Bristol, and the shady nightclub owner, Phil Nosseross, alongside his manipulative wife, Helen. Fabian’s aspirations become tangled in a web of deceit and betrayal as he tries to navigate the treacherous waters of London’s underworld.

In a pivotal moment, during a con at a wrestling match, Fabian witnesses an intense confrontation between veteran Greek wrestler Gregorius and his son Kristo, who has taken charge of all wrestling events in London. Gregorius passionately criticizes Kristo’s handling of wrestling, referring to his son’s promotion as mere “tasteless exhibitionism” that undermines the sport’s cherished Graeco-Roman traditions. After Gregorius storms off with fellow wrestler Nikolas, Fabian seizes upon an opportunity to team up with them, convinced that with Gregorius’s backing, he could establish a wrestling enterprise without interference from Kristo.

Fabian diligently approaches Phil Nosseross and Helen to pitch his lucrative proposal, seeking an investment to kickstart his dream. Though initially skeptical, Nosseross, spurred by Helen, surprisingly offers to contribute half of the £400 needed—if Fabian can match it. Desperation leads Fabian to seek financial aid from various unsavory characters, including Figler, the head of a local group of beggars, and Googin, a forger. Unfortunately for him, none are willing to lend a hand, pushing him deeper into a corner.

However, hope arises when Helen Nosseross steps in, presenting Fabian with the £200 needed, but not without strings attached—she requires him to secure her a license that grants her the right to run her nightclub. In a crafty twist, Fabian deceives her by enlisting Googin to create a forged document, setting the stage for further chaos. Meanwhile, as tensions rise, Kristo’s underlings confront Nosseross, warning him to keep Fabian far away from the wrestling scene. As his suspicions begin to mount regarding Helen’s loyalty, Nosseross fails to alert Fabian of the impending threat. Undeterred, Fabian launches his own gym, enlisting Gregorius and Nikolas as the main attractions, while having Nosseross play the role of his unknowing silent partner.

The situation escalates when Kristo discovers that his father supports Fabian’s venture, prompting him to plot retaliation alongside Nosseross. Their plan hinges on convincing Gregorius to abandon Fabian, but Nosseross, full of treachery, withdraws his support, suggesting that Fabian arrange a match between Nikolas and The Strangler—an explosive wrestler favored by Kristo. Fully aware of Gregorius’s pride in traditional wrestling, Fabian exploits this opportunity, persuading Mickey Beer, The Strangler’s manager, to set up the fight. As tensions mount, the stakes rise, leaving Fabian desperate for funds. He finds himself stealing from Mary to fuel his ambitions.

The showdown in the ring becomes a brutal spectacle where The Strangler, driven by personal vendetta, pushes Gregorius into a harrowing match, resulting in Nikolas sustaining a broken wrist. Ultimately, despite his fierce determination, Gregorius triumphantly defeats The Strangler, but the victory comes at a heartbreaking price; he succumbs to exhaustion right in Kristo’s embrace. As the dust settles, Fabian realizes he is devoid of both business and protection, forcing him to flee in search of safety.

In a dark turn of events, Kristo places a staggering £1,000 bounty on Fabian’s head, mobilizing London’s criminal elements to track him down relentlessly throughout the night. Meanwhile, Helen’s realization that her license is nothing but a worthless forgery sparks chaos in her life, leading to desperate attempts to reconcile with Phil, only to uncover his tragic suicide stemming from her departure.

As the night deepens, Fabian finds temporary refuge at Anna’s riverside scow, yet destiny catches up with him as Kristo’s men close in. In a final act of desperation, Fabian attempts to redeem himself by falsely accusing Mary of betrayal to throw Kristo off his scent. He rushes toward Kristo perched on Hammersmith Bridge, but fate is cruel; The Strangler ambushes him, leading to a violent end, as he is thrown into the cold depths of the river below. The Strangler is swiftly apprehended, while Kristo walks away unscathed, leaving behind a scene of devastation. All that remains is Mary, seeking comfort from her neighbor and friend, Adam Dunne, who is silently pained by his unspoken feelings for her. The story leaves a haunting echo of ambition, greed, and the heartbreaking consequence of betrayal that permeates the very lives entangled within it.
