After heated arguments with her father, she leaves home without his knowledge on the first Navaratri night. Nalina goes to the college hostel in search of her lover, only to discover that Anand has chosen to marry someone else. Feeling betrayed, she attempts suicide, but is stopped by a widower, Arputhraj. He takes her home and introduces her to his daughter, Kutti Padmini Lalitha Arputhraj, before urging Nalina to share her address so he can ensure she reaches safety. Refusing to return, Nalina slips away with dawn’s light.

• Second Night (Fear): The next day, Nalina accidentally damages a vegetable vendor’s stock, and a confrontation ensues. A kind, motherly woman intervenes and takes Nalina to her home, which conceals a brothel. Nalina encounters several women and is briefly closeted with a drunkard who rationalizes his behavior by claiming his wife’s illness reduces his libido, a justification Nalina finds hollow and harmful. She counsels him but he remains unrepentant, and after a scuffle, the drunkard collapses unconscious. Nalina escapes the brothel, shaken and unsettled by the encounter.

• Third Night (Compassion): After fleeing the brothel, Nalina is apprehended by a patrol for wandering at an odd hour. At the police station, she pretends to be a mentally ill woman to avoid capture. An elderly, compassionate doctor, Karunagaran, perceives through the ruse and helps her. He recognizes Nalina’s predicament as a misinterpretation rather than true illness. He even discovers a newspaper clue—a missing notice with Nalina’s photograph—before Nalina escapes the hospital at dawn while the doctor is preoccupied with the news.

• Fourth Night (Anger): Nalina, fearing capture, mistakes a police jeep for pursuit and rushes toward a man with a gun. The man she encounters is a killer who had avenged his brother’s death by eliminating a wealthy businessman. He urges Nalina to leave, but she feels a strange kinship with him and persuades him to surrender to the authorities. The gunman is killed in a clash with the businessman’s henchmen, and Nalina again escapes, her heart a tangled mix of fear and moral impulse.

• Fifth Night (Equanimity): Exhausted by life’s trials, Nalina walks onto a railway track to attempt suicide. A simple, innocent villager intervenes and saves her, guiding her to his home and introducing her to his elder sister. A local priest warns that Nalina’s presence could be exploited through fake rituals, warning Nalina that people may manipulate her suffering for money. Nalina grows irritated with their interference and escapes that night, seeking a respite from manipulation and danger.

• Sixth Night (Disgust): Nalina’s path crosses an elderly leper who once was prosperous but lost everything to treatment costs and charity. The man’s bitterness toward society and even his own son underscores the cost of wealth and decline. Nalina helps him get to a hospital, where a doctor—surprised at how the man once funded his medical career through charity—decides to stay by him until recovery. Nalina eventually leaves the hospital, carrying the weight of this encounter.

• Seventh Night (Elegance): Weak and exhausted, Nalina seeks water and finds herself at a residence where a troupe of performers is preparing for a village Navaratri show. The troupe’s director and actor, Sathyavaan Singaram, faces a critical shortage of actors as they race to stage the seventh-day performance. Nalina agrees to join them for the night, on the condition that she may leave after the show. The play is a success, lifting the troupe’s spirits and giving Nalina a sense of purpose and agency amidst her turmoil. After the performance, the troupe’s agent attempts misconduct, but the actor in charge reasserts boundaries and Nalina departs, choosing her own path forward.

• Eight Night (Bravery): Nalina disguises herself as a man named Nathan to approach a hunter named Veerapan. Veerapan, who claims to hunt a man-eater, proves to be the village’s police commissioner in disguise, pursuing a criminal. Nalina’s ruse nearly pays off as she realizes the truth and attempts to slip away, but her ruse is uncovered, and she is confronted by the hunter-commissioner who recognizes her disguise and intent. In a dramatic twist, the hunter reveals that the groom his heart believes Nalina is meant to marry is Anand, the very man she left behind at home. Nalina’s fear shifts to confusion as she confronts the reality that Anand is the groom arranged by her father, and she discovers that her lover is, in fact, the man she loves.

• Ninth Night (Bliss): Anand, pale and withdrawn, appears distant, having withdrawn after Nalina’s departure from home on the first Navaratri night.
