It’s 1954 in Austin, Texas, and a slightly pregnant Nadine Hightower [Kim Basinger] is in a lot of trouble. She heads to the shady studio of sleazy photographer Raymond Escobar [Jerry Stiller] to reclaim some photos that she believes are just art, or perhaps a stepping stone to something bigger. Escobar playfully asserts that he has connections and could help her reach the top, but Nadine’s instincts tell her she’s stepping into something risky. When she returns to the studio to retrieve her belongings, she becomes caught up in a murder scene and escapes with an envelope bearing her name, fleeing into a city that already feels hostile and suspicious.
Things quickly get more tangled than Nadine bargained for. She ends up with the wrong set of photographs, and those images contain much more than vanity—they hold plans for a new highway development. Those papers drift into the hands of her estranged husband, Vernon Hightower [Jeff Bridges], a good-looking, fast-talking alcoholic who runs a nearly empty bar called the Blue Bonnet. Vernon isn’t just searching for a way to cash in on the chaos; he’s also entangled with a former Pecan Queen who works for the Lone Star Brewing company [Glenne Headly], a detail that adds complexity to their already unstable alliance.
Pursuing the missing plans is Buford Pope [Rip Torn], a ruthless real estate magnate who will stop at nothing to reclaim them. Soon, Nadine and Vernon find themselves on the run not only from Pope but also from police who suspect they killed Escobar. Amid the urgency, the couple’s relationship is strained by deceit, half-truths, and a looming sense of danger, all while Nadine hides a personal truth—she’s pregnant with Vernon’s child—and the two must decide what kind of future they truly want.
As the chase intensifies, the film paints a portrait of a volatile marriage under pressure, where money, power, and family loyalties collide in a landscape of smoky studios, neon-lit bars, and ghostly memories of the city’s past. The tension between desire and responsibility threads through every decision, making Nadine and Vernon’s journey feel like a test they may not survive, even as they cling to the fragile possibility of a fresh start together.
