Norman Osborn Bennett (21 September 1922 – 7 July 2005) was a remarkably versatile English sportsman and physician whose life spanned the realms of elite rugby, first‑class cricket, naval medicine, and rural farming. Born in Putney, London, he was the son of Norman and Katherine Bennett, whose family business operated a large milk‑delivery service in south London; he grew up alongside three sisters—Elizabeth, Audrey and June—before earning a scholarship to Epsom College and later qualifying as a doctor at St Mary's Hospital in London. While completing his medical studies, Bennett distinguished himself on the sports field, playing rugby union for England during the 1947 season and representing the Royal Navy and United Services teams, a testament to his athletic prowess and his concurrent service as a Royal Navy doctor in the late 1940s. His brief cricket career consisted of a single first‑class appearance for Worcestershire against the Combined Services in 1946, where he scored ten runs and took one catch, an outing that, though modest statistically, underscored his dedication to multiple disciplines.
