Central Asia, at the dawn of the 18th century. A portrait of a region fractured by power and loyalties sets the stage as Galdan Tseren, ruler of the Western Mongolian clans, presses westward from the Derben Oirat heartland. His expansion comes at the expense of the Kazakh lands, bringing relentless hardship and upheaval to the Kazakh people. The once-thriving village where Sartai grows up is devastated by the Dzungar onslaught: grown villagers fall, parents are slain, cattle vanish, and the community is stripped of security. A handful of survivors—chiefly children and elders—flee into the mountains, led by the steadfast smith Nazar who becomes their reluctant guardian.

Seven years pass in the rugged highlands, where hunger and danger are constant companions, yet the refugees adapt and endure. Sartai, now a sixteen-year-old with the quick wit of a survivor, forms a tight circle with his friend Taimas and an older hunter named Korlan. Nazar teaches them the art of living off the mountains, the skills that keep them alive, and the hard rule to stay hidden away from the fertile steppe below—for the risk of discovery could spell doom. Yet the lure of the world they left behind—the stories of Batyrs, the legendary knights of the steppe—pulls at their hearts, whispering of glory and justice.

Driven by curiosity and the memory of old bravery, the trio slips out to glimpse the vast plains once more. Their hunger for meaning beyond survival pushes them toward the village of Rakhimjan, a respected Kazakh nobleman who has managed to endure in hostile times by maintaining a fragile non-aggression treaty with the Oirats. It is here that Sartai’s path collides with romance: he meets Zere, Rakhimjan’s daughter, and a longing to prove his worth blooms alongside his affection. He believes that courage and acts of valor can draw Zere’s notice and perhaps win her heart, a hope that will become intertwined with the fate of his people.

During a grand celebration, Sartai and Taimas witness Rakhimjan extend a cordial welcome to the Oirat envoys, an act that fuels their sense of righteous anger. They resolve to strike back at the invaders who razed their homes and killed many of their kin. Korlan joins their side, drawn by a shared vow to resist the conquerors and defend their homeland. Meanwhile, Kazakh leaders recognize the threat in unison and begin to marshal the clans, moving toward a unified front to resist the common foe. Yet Sartai and his companions choose to pursue their own course, bypassing the organized army to stage their own personal crusade.

As the youths carve out their own path of vengeance, Sartai encounters other orphans—Sabit, Ilyas, Assan, and Oussen—who crave retribution as much as he does. The group pulls off a string of audacious victories, their growing reputation matching the danger of their targets. The bond among them tightens, even as tensions surface between Sartai and Taimas, whose friendship begins to fray under the strain of competing ambitions and stubborn pride.

The tensions catch the attention of the Oirat commander, who orders Sartai’s death and seeks the support of Rakhimjan to accomplish this grim task.
