My Son Johnny 1991

Johnny Cortino is a 21-year-old hoodlum returning home to Baltimore after a stint in California, and while his ability to talk his way out of trouble remains intact, the reasons for his homecoming stay murky. His widowed mother Marianne is glad to see her son, but the air in the house thickens as Johnny’s presence unsettles everyone. The family dynamic grows tense, with neighbors and relatives watching the uneasy quiet settle over meals and conversations that used to be simple, as the past seems to press in on the present.

17-year-old Anthony is terrified that his older brother is back under the same roof. As soon as Johnny returns, the war of intimidation resumes, and Anthony reaches the breaking point after a particularly nasty beating by Johnny, when he pulls a gun on his brother and shoots him to death. Marianne is faced with an impossible choice: after years of denial about Johnny’s bullying, she is torn between upholding Johnny’s memory and defending her younger offspring, but she also realizes she must confront the terrible truth about Johnny, and, before the eyes of the world, admit there has been a lifetime of sibling violence.
