Lucy Moro [Elliot Page] and her older sister Martha [Amy Seimetz] are anti-death penalty protestors, fighting for the acquittal of their father Simon [Elias Koteas] who is on death row for the murder of their mother eight years ago. The siblings live in their parents’ house in a small Ohio town, traveling the country in a mobile home with their ten-year-old brother Ben [Charlie Shotwell].
During a demonstration outside a prison in Illinois, Lucy meets Mercy Bromage [Kate Mara], a lawyer whose father is a police officer with ties to the death penalty case. Despite the political tensions between them, Lucy and Mercy grow closer and begin to stay in contact over Skype. On a solo excursion to Missouri, their bond deepens into a romance.
Meanwhile, Martha is determined to free Simon and hires a lawyer who manages to secure a four-month stay of execution while they search for legal loopholes or any new evidence to reopen the case. When the last of their legal appeals is denied and the evidence continues to point toward Simon, a distraught Lucy travels to Illinois to visit Mercy. There, she discovers Mercy still lives with her parents and has a boyfriend. Lucy breaks up with Mercy, yet Mercy attends Simon’s execution with the sisters. Martha proposes they sell the house and move on for a fresh start, and Ben and Lucy agree.
Six months later, Lucy works as a waitress in California when Mercy shows up, hoping to rekindle their relationship. Lucy initially rejects her but eventually decides to give their renewed connection another chance.
