Set in a small Korean village during the Japanese occupation, An-hyeop is a striking young woman whose presence unsettles the community. Her husband, Kim Sam-bo, is a traveling gambler who returns home only for brief spells after months away. With him largely absent, she earns food, money, and other goods by picking mulberry leaves (ppong) for a neighbor who raises silkworms, and by having sexual liaisons with nearly every man in the village. This pattern of behavior sparks anger among the village women, who resent An-hyeop’s influence over their husbands.

They beat her, and then convince the village elder to expel her. When the elder visits An-hyeop’s home to urge her to leave, she seduces him and wins him over. The only man she refuses to sleep with is Sam-dol, the village servant. Frustrated, Sam-dol retaliates by telling Kim Sam-bo about her alleged promiscuity when he returns to the village. Sam-bo, angered by the accusation, beats Sam-dol for his verbal abuse of his wife. As Sam-bo leaves again to gamble, An-hyeop is left to fend for herself, gathering mulberry leaves. The film closes with a lively, humorous ode to spring (봄 - bom) and mulberry (뽕 - ppong).
