John Miller, a Vietnam War veteran turned factory worker in 1977 Detroit, has just cleared probation and dreams of a life with his girlfriend, Sophia after rescuing her from the drug-running mobster Reynolds, her abusive ex. But Reynolds, consumed by jealousy, persuades corrupt detective Lieutenant Savick to plant drugs in John’s car, and just as Sophia agrees to marry him, John is hauled away. The frame thickens as Kent—a weary detective—begins to suspect foul play, yet John is sentenced to 25 years behind bars, while Sophia, crushed, slips back into Reynolds’s highlife.

Inside the prison, Reynolds parades wealth and power, buying Sophia a house and a glittering lifestyle as John’s future seems to collapse. Kent presses Savick for answers and fights to uncover the truth, but the confrontation ends violently when Kent is killed by Savick, a brutal blow that hardens John’s resolve. Reynolds refuses to release Sophia, who remains entangled in his grip and far from the life she once envisioned. Meanwhile, Youngblood and Singh, John’s former comrades, begin to plot a high-stakes break, torturing guards to obtain a prison map that’s hidden in a coded letter to John. In a moment of desperate ingenuity, John fashions a shiv from hard candy, dons a guard’s uniform, and joins the breakout as Youngblood and Singh strike, killing several guards in a fiery, chaotic escape.

The escape leads to a perilous raid on Reynolds’s domain: the trio infiltrates Reynolds’s house to rescue a drugged Sophia. When Reynolds tries to shoot John, Sophia sacrifices herself with a fatal bullet, leaving John to flee with her engagement ring and a heart full of loss. Back on the street, the trio arms themselves with improvised munitions—explosives and shotgun shells packed with coins—and vows revenge. John prepares a deadly cartridge intended for Reynolds, embedding Sophia’s ring as a personal, irreversible symbol of vengeance.

In a brutal assault on Reynolds’s warehouse, the three brothers-in-arms strike hard. Youngblood is cut down, and Singh falls to a fatal shot from Savick, who confronts John in an elevator with Singh’s knife. John barely survives a savage duel by taking Savick’s leg with a precise shot, forcing the villain to the brink. Carrying Savick’s lifeless body to the roof, John drops it onto a car loaded with Reynolds’s henchmen, a calculated blow that halts Reynolds’s escape. On the street below, John wounds Reynolds in the face with a homebuilt shell and leaps onto Reynolds’s car for a climactic confrontation. The car careens in a high-stakes chase and crash, and Reynolds manages to slip away.

Decades later, an elderly, wealthy Reynolds remains secluded in a mansion, while John—scarred but unbroken—tracks him down. He sends a threatening scrapbook of old newspaper clippings as a warning, and when John finally infiltrates the mansion, he confronts Reynolds at gunpoint. Reynolds swears he loved Sophia, but John—still loving her—shoots him dead, bringing his long, painful quest for vengeance to a cold, final close.
