Captain Richmond Talbot, Tom Tryon, an Air Force captain, inadvertently volunteers to pilot the first crewed flight around the Moon. He is ordered to keep the mission secret, even from his family on upcoming leave, a demand that compounds the pressure of duty with the ache of separation.

On the way to visit his relatives, Talbot is approached by Lyrae, Dany Saval, a mysterious “foreign” girl who seems to know more about the mission than she should. She steps into his path with a calm confidence and warns him of possible defects in his spacecraft, a warning he initially brushes off as the product of a spy’s plot. When he voices concerns to his superiors, the response is swift and cold: the Air Force orders him home and places him under the protection of “National Security,” a thinly disguised FBI-like agency meant to keep the mission under wraps at all costs.

As the investigation unfolds, Lyrae reveals herself not as an enemy but as a friendly alien from the planet Beta Lyrae. She arrives with a strange, shimmering offer: a special paint formula that, when applied to his rocket, could safeguard his brain from the dangers of proton rays. The allure of this otherworldly solution tempts Talbot, and he finds himself slipping away from the guards who have been shadowing him to spend more time with her. The emotional pull grows stronger as the mission clock continues to tick.

After the rocket launches, Lyrae reappears beside him and persuades him to visit her planet. Talbot, drawn by a blend of wonder and longing, tells Mission Control that he will be a little late returning. The routine of spaceflight gives way to something stranger and more intimate, a journey that blurs the line between duty and desire.

The closing moments leave Mission Control baffled by the bizarre transmissions pouring in from the spacecraft and from Talbot’s side of the line, including a romantic duet about Beta Lyrae. The film ends on a note of cosmic mystery and emotional resonance, suggesting that love and the vast unknown of space can intersect in ways no one aboard can fully explain.
