Janice Vernon Karen Valentine is married to traveling salesman Nelson Vernon Richard Masur, and they have a son with special needs. Facing severe financial hardship, Janice lists their home for sale through the realty firm run by Karen Gordon Susan Flannery. When the house doesn’t sell, Karen Gordon’s firm offers Janice a drastic option: she could work as an escort for the business. Janice feels reluctant at first, but the mounting financial pressure gradually overcomes her hesitation and she steps into a world she never imagined.
Michelle Jamison Jamie Lee Curtis is a highly educated secretary who loves the sense of control and the thrill of hooking. Her estranged husband has a drinking problem, and she uses some of the money she earns as a prostitute to fix her car after he wrecks it while driving drunk.
Annie Gilson Linda Purl is studying for her real estate license with Karen Gordon, and she’s saving money to buy a house. She is married with a young daughter, but her abusive husband has no idea she turns tricks on the side.
The three women grow close as they work together, forging a uneasy friendship amid the dangers and demands of their new routine. The police become aware that Karen Gordon’s firm is a front for an escort business, and she is eventually arrested along with several of her workers. Annie Gilson dies by hanging in jail, leaving Janice to grapple with the consequences of her choices. Janice tries to explain to her husband what she felt she had to do, and she tells him, > we’re just people, < but he still leaves her.
This story unfolds against a backdrop of financial strain and moral ambiguity, examining how ordinary people cope when the pressure to survive collides with personal boundaries, secrecy, and the fragile bonds of friendship.
