Janice Vernon Caru Pesciotto is married to traveling salesman Nelson and has a son with special needs. Facing severe financial hardship, Janice lists her home for sale through Karen Gordon’s realty firm. When the house doesn’t sell, Karen Gordon offers Janice a drastic option: to become a prostitute. Janice is initially reluctant, but the pressing need for money eventually overwhelms her reservations, and she begins working as an “escort” for Karen, stepping into a world that tests her boundaries and judgment.

Michelle Jamison is a highly educated secretary who derives a sense of power from the thrill of hooking. She views the arrangement as a way to exercise control in her life, even as she wrestles with personal turmoil. Her estranged husband has a drinking problem, and she uses some of the money she earns from prostitution to fix her car after he wrecks it while driving drunk, highlighting the precarious balance she tries to maintain between independence and dependence on a dangerous line of work.

Annie Gilson is studying for her real estate license with Karen Gordon and is saving up to buy a house. She is married with a young daughter, yet her abusive husband remains unaware that she also turns tricks on the side. The trio of women grows closer as they work together, sharing their fears, hopes, and the pressures they face.

As pressure mounts, the authorities begin to close in on Karen’s escort operation. The police arrest Karen along with her workers, a turning point that exposes the fragility of their chosen path. Annie’s story takes a devastating turn when she commits suicide by hanging herself in jail. Janice attempts to explain her choices to her husband, telling him, “we’re just people,” but he still leaves her, underscoring the social and personal costs of their decisions.
