But there is one article Tibbe refuses to publish: a profile of the wealthy Mr. Ellemeet, the chemical factory owner who people in town tout as respectable and an animal lover. Behind the polished façade, cats—and the instinctive distrust they feel—see something darker. This tension becomes the crux of the story, as Minoes aims to reveal the truth without tearing Tibbe apart.

Eventually Minoes persuades Tibbe to publish the incriminating piece, and the town turns its back on him. He loses his job and is nearly evicted from his apartment, a heavy consequence for a man who just wanted to tell the truth.
